QB Battle is still ongoing

While I still think Pyron has a leg up on the rest of the competition, it was noted from some folks that there isn’t a wide margin of separation between King and Pyron. King reportedly had some overthrows, as well as Pyron, but sources left the scrimmage feeling that Pyron looks to be the guy. Zach Gibson seemingly slots into that capable backup role, but the fire that he possesses allows Georgia Tech to sit with its deepest quarterback room in years I’m sure that competition is ongoing still.

Wideouts making their mark

Three names really stood out in this group. Transfers Abdul Janneh and Christian Leary have impressed in fall camp, and that showed on Saturday. Add in the continued emergence of Malik Rutherford and it seems that those three could see the majority of the snaps. DJ Moore’s stock is also trending up, the talent has always been there but now with a bigger opportunity Moore is capitalizing. The wideout room as a whole has some exciting and young talent that continues to mature.

Running Back room is taking shape

This year Dontae Smith gets the chance to be the focal point of this room, but will be a bell-cow? Jamie Felix figures to get some time after earning playing time late last season. Evan Dickens has impressed and could challenge for some snaps, and we also can’t forget about transfer back Trey Cooley who could make an impact. Don’t sleep on Jamal Haynes either. However, Smith is the clear-cut guy and will receive the majority of the carries.

Defense still shining

I asked the question in last weeks’ podcast, can Georgia Tech’s defense take the next step? Well, Saturday was a step in the right direction. It was a solid effort that the Jackets defense was able to put together. The linebacker position has seen Trenilyas Tatum and Andre White rise to the occasion. I think Tatum has progressed well in the eyes of Kevin Sherrer and Andrew Thacker and could be starting when the Jackets open up the season. The defense did pick off the offense several times and overall played well. It took some well-timed passes for the offense to find any big plays down the field.

Specialists…

Remember Aiden Birr? Yea, he’s good. Really good. Birr impressed those in attendance with his leg. Special teams coach Ricky Brumfield noted in his press conference that both kickers looked good and that they were just now getting to the “live” situations. I think it’s a healthy competition that could continue to roll along as the season nears.

How concerned should we be with overthrows in the middle of fall camp?

As the season gets closer, the more I lean towards my pessimistic ways of thinking. These last few years have done on a number on my mental football health lol

We’ve seen Pyro live and he’s got some balls. If it’s close competition, you don’t bench a guy like that. He’s a winner.
My question is what their relative skill sets include. Does one throw a more accurate pass? Does one have a quicker release? Is one more mobile? Does one run better? If their strengths compliment each other, I can see them being 1a and 1b and both get playing time.

This video of Zach Pyron from the VT game glitches out from the 15 sec -30 sec mark, but it you can see Pyron has the potential for the skills you mention, but also the instincts and determination that I think give him the "IT" factor.

This is Haynes King, who appears to be quicker and more elusive as a runner, but not the so much the straight ahead up the middle runner.

What I gathered from Weinke's comments after the week before last was that Gibson was better at layering the ball, but King and Pyron were more mobile.

It’s good to have a real battle for QB. Interesting note; some rando on Facebook, claiming to be a former player with insider knowledge, posted that King is the man. He said he wasn’t guessing, he was informing. Well, we’ll see soon!

Nice to have more than one QB that is starter level. It seems that it is becoming the norm to need more than one QB to get through the season.

How concerned should we be that the WR's should be running a deeper route to catch those?

I'm a bit concerned on the DEF comment-" they picked off the QBs several times".Some Off coaches would think VERY poorly of that in the competition.

The rando on FB may end up being right, but I can assure you know one outside of that locker room knows. And I am not guessing, just informing.

Just like the article posted. I will reserve my opinion, but I have a fairly good idea of where this "info" may be coming from.

My suggestion is this: Know they are working their tails off first and foremost. Any film you saw last year of any of the 3 won't look the same this year. Different strength staff, different OC, etc. I know some have gotten bigger, some have gotten a lot faster, and some have drastically improved their arm strength. And that's exactly what you want to see happening...growth.

Key is running this right and I commend him for that, never doubted it would be handled any differently. He will share when and what he feels is in the best interest of the team. I'd take everything you read with a grain of salt, but I guess doing the opposite is a lot more fun leading up to the first game.

This is year will be fun, there will be improvement, and there will also be bumps and unforeseen things happen. It's the nature of the game. And lastly, I can promise you GT fans aren't the only ones who want to win 9+ games.....that locker room wants that with a passion. They just need our support, patience, and showing up raising hell on game days.

But who am I to know.

LOL I'm not sure that kid's elevator goes to the top. 100% lying about being a former player also.
