QB Battle is still ongoing
While I still think Pyron has a leg up on the rest of the competition, it was noted from some folks that there isn’t a wide margin of separation between King and Pyron. King reportedly had some overthrows, as well as Pyron, but
sources left the scrimmage feeling that Pyron looks to be the guy. Zach Gibson seemingly slots into that capable backup role, but the fire that he possesses allows Georgia Tech to sit with its deepest quarterback room in years I’m sure that competition is ongoing still.
Wideouts making their mark
Three names really stood out in this group. Transfers Abdul Janneh and Christian Leary have impressed in fall camp, and that showed on Saturday. Add in the continued emergence of Malik Rutherford and it seems that those three could see the majority of the snaps. DJ Moore’s stock is also trending up, the talent has always been there but now with a bigger opportunity Moore is capitalizing. The wideout room as a whole has some exciting and young talent that continues to mature.
Running Back room is taking shape
This year Dontae Smith gets the chance to be the focal point of this room, but will be a bell-cow? Jamie Felix figures to get some time after earning playing time late last season. Evan Dickens has impressed and could challenge for some snaps, and we also can’t forget about transfer back Trey Cooley who could make an impact. Don’t sleep on Jamal Haynes either. However, Smith is the clear-cut guy and will receive the majority of the carries.
Defense still shining
I asked the question in last weeks’ podcast, can Georgia Tech’s defense take the next step? Well, Saturday was a step in the right direction. It was a solid effort that the Jackets defense was able to put together. The linebacker position has seen Trenilyas Tatum and Andre White rise to the occasion. I think Tatum has progressed well in the eyes of Kevin Sherrer and Andrew Thacker and could be starting when the Jackets open up the season. The defense did pick off the offense several times and overall played well. It took some well-timed passes for the offense to find any big plays down the field.
Specialists…
Remember Aiden Birr? Yea, he’s good. Really good. Birr impressed those in attendance with his leg. Special teams coach Ricky Brumfield noted in his press conference that both kickers looked good and that they were just now getting to the “live” situations. I think it’s a healthy competition that could continue to roll along as the season nears.
