Interesting stat of CPJ 1st year at Navy

Red Zone
Navy scored on 35 of its 44 trips inside the Red Zone (.795) and scored touchdowns on 31 of those 44 trips (.705).
The defense gave up points in 51 of the 59 times the opposition has reached the Red Zone (.861). Fourty one of the 59 trips resulted in touchdowns (.695).

If our O can perform as well with better athleties but against overall tougher competition and our D can perform up to expectations, what would our record be our 1st year?

Scoring 80% of the time in the Red Zone is mind boggling.

Scoring a TD 70% of the time makes scoring 80% of the time look mediocre.

Excellent find!

Last year we scored in the red zone 83% of the time...good for 5th in the ACC. The top was VT at 91% and bottom was NCState at 71%.

For TD's in the red zone (keep in mind ACC defense is much tougher) we were at 52%. DUKE lead the ACC with 68% TD's in the red zone.

Anybody know the Points Scored Per Possession for both teams?

That stat actually means something.

What the stat means to me is that CPJ took a poor team his 1st year, installed his spread Option O and was to put points on the board at very impressive rate with little talent. He however was not to stop people from scoring do to lack of talent on D.

With Wormack and the talent that we have on D, that won't be a concern.

1) With the much more talented players we have on O compared to Navy's O CPJ 1st year will we able to score even against tougher teams then what Navy faced.

2) If Navy was able to grasp the system & score so efficiently their 1st year under CPJ, then wouldn't it be reasonable to expect GT to it also instead of the 2 to 3 years that some are projecting

3) That the 2-10 record CPJ's 1st year was largely do to their poor D rather taking time to install a new O or getting in personnel who could run it

The TD rate is impressive. I'm more interested in that and how it stacks up with the rest of the country/ACC. Scoring rate seems to me to be more a function of how good your field goal kicker is and philosophy/conservatism of the coach than how good the offense is. TD rate seems more of a telling statistic to offense. Kicking a lot of field goals in the "gold"zone is well and good, but it can also be a good way to lose a critical game. The fact that CPJ doesn't have to change approach/formation/personnel in goaline/short yardage sitautions is another characteristic of this offense that I like, and I think it will lend itself to better goldzone production. But, you know, we've got to get to the goldzone first.

Of course...interesting that Duke had the best team in the ACC if you measure by TD's vs. red zone opp's.

Yeah, that is weird.

Who knows? Maybe it's that Duke made it to the goldzone so seldom that when they did, they got so excited they played like worldbeaters.

Gotta love that Navy punt statistic though.

Navy punts in 07 = 24
GT punts in 07 = 67

You can do the math

Yes, but remember,we had Durant Brooks. It'd have been a shame to waste that talent by not punting the ball as much as we did. We should have punted more.

More than likely, 1st team defenses kept Duke out of the red zone. So the stat is probably puffed up with 1st team offense vs. 2nd or 3rd team defense.

i agree. for the life of me i cant understand why we never utilized the 3rd down quick kick. line up Brooks at Slot, bring him in motion, direct snap, BOOM - 70yrd punt with no return. we would have won field position battle every time!
