The following stats cover the entire length of the Gailey tenure at GT starting in 2002 through the Maryland game this past Saturday.

Our offense has averaged 22.33 points per game and ranks 91st of the 117 teams that have been D-IA since Gailey arrived.

Our offense has averaged 2.70 TD per game over this same period which ranks 95th out 117. No team that has averaged fewer than 3.00 TD per game has appeared in a BCS bowl or won 10+ games over this period.

Our defense has allowed 19.40 points per game and ranks 17th out of 117 since Gailey arrived. GT is the only team ranked in the Top 20 in this category to never appear in a BCS bowl or win 10+ games over this period.

Good stats JTS, I'm a little surprised our PPG isn't a bit higher at around 24, but that's a telling stat to say THE ONLY team in the top 20 defensively the last 5 years to not win 10 games.

In Points Differential, GT ranks 52nd out of 117 NCAA, 41st out of 66 BCS teams, and 9th out of 12 ACC teams with only Duke, UNC, and Wake lower.

Only 3 teams (GT, BC, and Alabama) in the Top 20 have not appeared in a BCS bowl.

Honestly, I'm surprised it's that high.

Thanks for the stats JTS --I enjoy digging up this kind of stuff and enjoy reading it when others take the time to compile the numbers.

I knew the offense under CCG was far from stellar but I am somewhat surprised by the 91st ranking in total offense. That's awful --especially taking into consideration that for over 50% of the games CCG has coached GT had one of the best --if not the best-- WR in college football.

Just curious; but how do we compare in conference as opposed to nationally. The ACC has been a defensively loaded; but offensively anemic conference the past few years it seems.

That's the killer in my mind.

In Scoring Offense, we rank 10th out of 12 ACC teams ahead of only UNC and Duke. The 9th ranked team, Wake, averaged 24.70 compared to 22.33 for GT. By comparison, Ole Miss (22.33) is the 10th ranked SEC team and Northwestern (23.34) is the 10th ranked Big Ten team.

In Scoring Defense, GT (19.40) ranks 5th out of 12 ACC teams just barely behind BC (18.72) and FSU (18.70). For comparison, Florida (19.20) is the 5th ranked SEC team and Michigan (19.33) is the 5th ranked Big 10 team.

In Winning Percentage, GT ranks 50th out of 117 in D-IA, 39th of 66 BCS teams, and 8th out of 12 ACC teams ahead of only Duke, UNC, NC St., and Wake since Gailey was hired.

GT has scored the fewest points (22.33 ppg) and Touchdowns (2.70 pg) of any team with a winning record since Gailey was hired.

No team has allowed fewer points (19.40 ppg) than GT and had a worse Winning Percentage since Gailey was hired. 33 of 49 teams with better Winning Percentages since Gailey arrived have allowed more points per game.

We rank a disappointing 7th in the ACC in SWAGGER!!!!!!!!!!!! over the Gailey era. Behind Maryland, Miami, FSU, VT, Clemson, and well behind #1 NCSt (under Amato).

Of course we're going to have less swagger than NCSt, with those double D cups you're going to have some confidence.:laugher:

what were our rankings prior to CG?

When was the last time GT went to a BCS (orange, sugar, rose, and fiesta)?

We have never gone to a BCS game.

We went to the OB in 1966, the most recent of the ones you listed.

Haha. Awesome.

Just curious - do you have the same information for the 5 years prior to Gailey's arrival? I've tried to look at this before but could never find it.

FWIW, I think 1967 Orange Bowl but I didn't bother to look it up. Not that that means anything in the context of this conversation.

I am using the stats from ncaa.org which I have dumped into Excel. Ncaa.org only has stats from 1999 and the 1999 stats are in a different format than the rest which does not dump into Excel easily.

But here are the same stats for the '00 to '01 time period:

In Winning Percentage, GT ranked 19th of 114 D-IA, 12th of 63 BCS teams, and 2nd of 8 ACC teams only behind FSU.

In Scoring Offense, GT ranked 17th of 114 D-IA, 10th of 63 BCS teams, and 2nd of 8 ACC teams only behind FSU.

In Scoring Defense, GT ranked 26th of 114 D-IA, 18th of 63 BCS teams, and 2nd of 8 ACC teams only behind FSU.

In Points Differential, GT ranked 14th of 114 D-IA, 10th of 63 BCS teams, and 2nd of 8 ACC teams only behind FSU.

BCS bowls have only existed since 1998. GT has not gone to a BCS bowl during this time, but did win a conference championship in 1998. If current BCS rules existed in previous years, GT would have gone to a BCS bowl in 1998 as ACC Champ because FSU could not repeat in a co-champ situation (I think?). If I am wrong, then 1990 would have been the last BCS if current rules applied. GT last won 10+ games in 1999.
