Heard it on the Wes/Barnhardt show on 790 today at lunch:

There's a BCS clause saying that any undefeated team who has a higher BCS ranking than a team that gets an automatic bid (e.g. the ACC winner) also gets an automatic bid.

That means if the ACC winner - presumably either Tech, WF, or Maryland, doesn't leapfrong Boise State before the BCS Bowls select their teams, then Boise is guaranteed a slot, whether they make that 'top 12' number or not.

And since the host of the NC game picks last for their regular bowl, the Fiesta will likely be Texas vs Boise State.

Pretty wild, huh?

The top 12 or top 16 and ranked higher than the lowest ranked BCS conference champ clause only applies to mid major members (WAC, C-USA, MAC etc). So Wes/Barnhardt said it applies to any D1A team that winds up undefeated?

Can't remember the details, but said it definitely applied to Boise State. Regardless, I can't imagine a team in a conference lower than a mid-major getting enough poll votes to where it'd matter.

It has nothing to do with being undefeated.

The sub-BCS conference champions are guaranteed 1 BCS slot for the highest rated champion if in the Top 12 or if in the Top 16 and higher than one of the BCS conference champs.

There's a good chance the ACC champion will be rated #13 or higher and thus will be irrelevant to Boise State's bid.

Certainly a 12-1 Wake or 11-2 Maryland or 11-2 GT would be higher than #13, and even with one additional loss all could easily be that high.
