passed away my sincere condolences to his family and friends. A Ugager and Ga Southern but a dang good coach. Made a mistake, OK Erk Russell. Even old guys can't spell properly.

Actually, it's ERK Russell

RIP, old coach.

Apparently had a stroke and a car wreck.

Great man and a great ambassador for college football. Thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I didn't get a chance to play for Coach Russell at GSU but knew him well and was always behind the scenes. One of the nicest men you would ever have the chance to meet.:(

Is he in the Hall of Fame yet?

One of the greatest football coaches ever. Just wish he had have been TECH.

Regards to his family and loved ones.

I admired the coach/man very much myself.
Back in the mid 70s when I only sensed something very unnatural and fundamentally wrong about uga, I thought Erk taking his bald dome and head butting his players was awesome. It sounds pretty stupid now, but seeing your defensive coach with blood running into his eyes had to pump up his team.

In usual Prince Dooooley fashion, his ego couldn't handle offering the uga job to Russell when he retired.
Let's see uga legend Erk, or Ray Goff? Hmm.

I have to admit that in my days of youthful indisrections I walked-on to the UGAg team in the mid-late 70's for a 1 1/2 years (before maturity took hold) and Erk Russell and I struck up a decent relationship and I wasn't even a defensive player. Many coaches there, back then, didn't have much time for walk-ons but Erk and Coach Hartman were diifferent - true gentlemen. I'll miss the both of them.

Back in the days of youth before I was a diehard bonafide Jacket fan Erk Russell was the man! A terrific defensive coordinator whose '60' and 'wide tackle 6' defenses was bending at times but rarely ever broke.

Very sad day for all of college football but especially for the state of Georgia.

Edit: 'Irk Russel'? C'mon Foggy.

C'mon SLJ, I said I missed the spelling. Truthfully I was deep in thought when I made this post. I have sold my house, in the process of moving, buying a new house so again I know it's ERK, just got other things to deal with now.

Coach Russell played football and baseball at Auburn while my Dad was there as a basketball player. He came to Atlanta and coached at Grady High in Atlanta before joining fellow War Eagle VD at UGA. He was indeed a first class person.

His family had a very sad tragedy in the loss of a young son. They overcame that, and he had the joy of his son playing for him at UGA. What he began at GSU was terrific.

It's a sad day and our thoughts and prayers are with the family. They lost a great man.
