irony is F$U board ripping JoPa for being too old and signing 3 yr deal

I admit I am no Penn State historian but it would seem that this year is one of their best years in the history of that program.

This is so funny to me. You basically have two massive state football schools who are absolutely STUCK right now with two old fogeys holding their programs down. Neither are going to budge first.
Just give em both the Bear Bryant trophy.

I don't think JoePa is holding down the program, he's been on a pretty decent run the last few years.

Agreed. It seems to me that JoePa is at least bringing in the results. The same cannot be said of Papa Bowden. His current teams have been a shadow of their past...

Does anyone know how much influence either of them retain on their teams?

From a friend of mine here that played for Joepa, he says he still gets in the mix quite a bit. Doesn't stand in his ivory tower like papa b does.

JoePa is "holding their program down?" Is that what you call winning 40 games in 4 seasons? Man, I hope Paul Johnson is willing to "hold our program down" sometime soon.

Now, FSU on the other hand....

It HAS to depress FSU fans. Paterno took the lead back this year and has no signs of giving it up. Now FSU is stuck because Bowden is trying to outlast Paterno.

Wow, I must say, if Joe Pa has won 40 games in the last four seasons, then I am wrong. But let's be fair, PSU plays in the Big Ten which, every bowl season, proves itself pretty weak as a conference. PSU should win 10 games a year, just like UGA should win 10 games a year in the SEC.

2005: 11-1 with a BCS win
2006: 9-4 with a normal bowl win
2007: 9-4 with a normal bowl win
2008: 11-1 with a BCS berth

Sometimes his success get lost in all the jokes about his old age. Yeah, he's old, and he just had hip surgery so he was physically limited this season, but with these types of results why shouldn't he continue to coach?

I must admit that I am stuck on his awful run the five years before those. And again, PSU has every imaginable advantage in college football. They should win every game they play annually except for 50% of Ohio State, Michigan and 1 hot Big Ten team. When he was playing .500 ball, it was a joke.

That's a bumpkiss argument. I'm no Penn State fan, and I generally loathe the attention heaped upon the Big Ten, but Joe Paterno has done a remarkable job of keeping that team in the mix. A few years back, some of the alums wanted JoePa to go out to graze, but the school kept him around and he's paid dividends. St. Bobby is basically treading water, and it seems that when Commandant Dickface left FSU and took his exceptional motivational techniques to the cesspool in Athens, the ship started leaking.

As for his involvement in the team, Paterno had to have his hip replaced this year, because he aggravated his injure when showing his players the proper way to onside kick a football. Penn State should let him coach as long as he wants, and if he's 98 and drooling in a wheel chair, and they're still winning, then get him a hot nurse and a ride to the early bird specials and let him coach.
