We will remember two very important things during the next few days:

1) We still hate UGA. Every two years it is good to see them as we never want to forget why we hate them so!

2) What a terrible job the Athletic Association of our school does of keeping opponents out of our stadium.

What if a some bright alums and friends of GT came up with a referendum for Dan R. and it was presented in a constructive way. I know this board can come up with solutions that will work and pass the test of time. I will be responsible for keeping up with the ideas, combine them, present them back to the group for consensus and ultimately meet with Dan R. to present our ideas.

I have several ideas but will refrain on all but one for now.

GoldRush Idea #1

All games against Clemson, Virginia Tech, UGA, and Florida State are precluded from being part of a three game ticket package. Single game tickets to these games would only be available to current season ticket holders, GT alumni and AT fund contributors of $300 (to keep the enemy from donating $1 and becoming an AT contributor) or more per year.

This population of GT supporters should be actively solicited to help sellout our stadium and turn Bobby Dodd Gold. If the game is not a sellout thirty days prior, the tickets are available for $100 each if you do not fall into one the above mentioned categories.

Additionally, GT fans are actively reminded to keep the opponents colors out of Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Friends, and I consider you friends, we must take back our own stadium! Let's turn it Gold and create an environment that will strike worry and concern into our opponents!

I am looking forward to all of the ideas we will receive and please never forget the Good Word.

THWG!

With the division of the fanbase as it is now, i shudder to look at all the red that is going to be at BDS saturday. I agree UGAG, Clemson and FSU should not be part of any 3 game pack, not so sure about VT.

How about this?

Fill the entire North stands with cardboard cutouts of gold clad GT fans. Sell the remainder of the seats to the above mentioned groups of people.

I'm afraid our stadium is too big for our ticket buying fan base.

How is it the AA's fault GT fans don't buy tickets? I'm not sure I understand that.

The AA isn't the reason I don't have season tickets. Geography is.

Solutions, we need solutions!

The AA has made it easy for opponents to gobble up huge number of tickets with the stupid three pack.

Idea #1 is trying to do what Clemson does, which is try to reach the entire list of graduates that live close, even if it is just for one game. If you make it fun, they might just open up their wallets and contribute or perhaps even buy season tickets.

I wonder if it was indeed that much fun, would someone from California jump on plane to attend one game a year, say GT versus FSU or GT versus UGA?

According to the Alumni Association website there are 43,840 GT alumni in the state of GA and 36,106 in the Atlanta metro area [link].

There are 229,500 UGA alumni registered online at their website [link] and 80,000 UGA alumni living in the Atlanta area according to this article [link].

If you assume that UGA and GT alumni are distributed the same way between the Metro Atlanta Area (82%) and the rest of GA (18%), there are about 97,200 UGA alumni in the state so for every GT alumni there are about 2.25 UGA alumni in the state. IMO, I would think that a larger percentage UGA alumni would be in the rest of GA, but we'll assume the same for now.

We might not be selling out our 55,000 seat stadium, but if I recall correctly we were selling out the stadium at 44,000 regularly and with a normal distribution between home and visiting fans. 44,000 times 2.25 equals 99,000. The cesspool seats 92,760.

I think this analysis still underestimates the UGA buyer pool. First, I think that on a percentage basis fewer UGA alumni live in the Atlanta Metro Area than GT alumni. If you assume only 70% of UGA alumni are in the metro area, you have 2.6 UGA alumni per GT alumni in the state which translates to about 114,400 seat stadium. Second, it does not include impact of having local family on the buyer pool. 80% UGA students are in-state while only 60% GT students are in-state. Third, unaligned fans are going to tend go with the team that wins the most or the one their friends root for. UGA has won more than us and people are probably going to know twice as many UGA alums [see the numbers above].

I really don't think that we are as far behind UGA as most people think. We just have a much smaller built-in buyer pool relative to UGA.

I wonder if it was indeed that much fun, would someone from California jump on plane to attend one game a year, say GT versus FSU or GT versus UGA?

I don't need "fun" gimmicks to convince me to go to GT games. In my 4 years as a student, I only missed two home games.

I'm out here for work, though. If were going back anywhere this weekend, it'd be with my family in Alabama. Instead of paying $600 roundtrip to sit through a ton of travel delays over a short week, I decided just to extend my Christmas vacation instead.

I think this embodies what a lot of people complain about when it comes to GT fans - we're logical thinkers, and kind of cheap. Especially since this is my first year on the job I don't have a ton of money to blow on flying back to Atlanta for a weekend just for a football game. (Doesn't help Delta's fares keep going up....)

Also, kudos to JTS for digging up the numbers. The main reason it's easy for opposing fans to get tickets is that there's simply not enough GT fans to buy them. As he pointed out, it's not as large as people think, and if we stepped it up in terms of performance the tickets would sell themselves. Didn't season tickets sales go up this year, even with the Tech Fund? I suspect the reason for that was the ACCCG and Gator Bowl appearance, not because of clowns in the parking lots.

Also, I don't see how $100 tickets is supposed to help anyone at all. Us or the AA. Opposing fans are already buying the 3-packs anyway, which presumably cost more than $100.

Referendum?

I vote FOR the Gold Rush.

One big factor that your analysis does not include-

My guess is that the average UGAg alum is more interested in football than the average GT alum. So while we may have quite a few alums around, many of them could not care less about football.

I also think the sidewalk fan issue is much larger than you include in the analysis. Would love to see what percentage of season ticket holders are actual graduates of each respective school, although I doubt such a stat exists. I bet there is a higher percentage of grads that hold season tickets to GT than to UGAg...

SMoney beat me to it. I agree --UGA has a lot of sidewalk fans --devoted sidewalk fans who do hold season tickets. I know a few.

Ironic I suppose that I am considered a GT sidewalk fan (with a twist of being a UGA grad) --and I buy tickets. Oddly enough --in my section is another UGA grad/GT 'sidewalk' fan who buys GT tix as well.

Here's an idea - Put a product on the field that our fans want to come see and your problems are solved.

This is too easy!! Even a Rhodes Scholar from ugag could figure that out.

The 3 Pack is not that big of a factor. How many Clemson fans bought 3 packs? I would imagine that number is less than 300, but there were probably 15,000 Clemson fans in BDS this year. All they had to do was drive down here and pick up tickets for less than face on the street. Tickets from "Professional" scalpers were going for less than face (45 minutes prior to kickoff). It wasn't hard for them to get tickets, all they had to do was make the drive down 85, tickets were a breeze and it had nothing to do with the 3 pack.

How many Dawg fans bought 3 Packs, probably around 3,000-4,000. So its a bigger factor, but not the main problem. On saturday you will see totally red UGA sections and ton of Red sprinkled around prime GT seating. The problem is that there are tons of GT grads, season ticket holders and even some contributors that sell, give, and bring enemy fans to the games.

If we want the place to be filled with GT fans, we've got to start making some more and have those new fans start buying tickets from the GTAA and also start competing for tickets that come available "after market" How many GT fans are out fighting for these "aftermarket" tickets that are available to the highest bidder.

I could use about 8 more tickets for Tech fans and I did just get two tonight from a fan who just wants other Tech fans in his seats. Thanks Brian.

God I HATE the word goldrush... If you ever lived in Dahlonega, GA for any period of time you'd know why.

just keep telling yourself that GT alumnus have EVER been the core of our fanbase.

Maybe we should build a new stadium 'out in Gwinnett.'

If GT alums aren't the core of our fanbase, than who the hell is? All 5 sidewalk fans?
