Jackets landed a new recruit today....

I've seen him play multiple times. This young man is very smart and has wanted to attend GT for three years. I'm glad to see he was offered. Very Strong!

So glad he is going to be on the Flats.

He's 6'4" and weights 280. He's the state champion in wrestling and is keeping his weight down for the nationals in a few weeks. He's planning on coming in at 300 pounds and will be used at guard and tackle. He chose Tech over Georgia and Vandy and was beginning to get letters from quite a few schools. He said he couldn't pass up the combination of good football and academics which he couldn't get at Georgia. This means a lot since he grew up a dawg fan.

Welcome to the Flats young man, Great choice! Is he from the same high school as Anthony Barnes, also a Cartesville native?

Just curious...Had he been offered by any of the schools you mentioned he turned down?

Yep, Same HS as Barnes and Robert Lavette. Great pickup, Cartersville is definitely UGAg country. I hope we are finally making strides up here.

On a different note - and sorry for the hijack - I have been at Disney for the past week - just got back last night. On Wednesday, I was standing in line for some fish and chips in the English section of Epcot - I was not wearing any Tech gear. Older gentleman that had retired to Orlando from Wisconsin (spends many of his days at Epcot) and I talked while in line.

Told him I was from Adairsville. He said he has family in Woodstock and begins to tell me about his kid and grandchildren. States that he is very proud of his grandaughter because she chose to go to Georgia Tech while all of her friends chose to go to UGAg. Said she wants to "make something of herself" so she went to Tech. I then told him that I was a Tech man and that she couldn't have chosen a better school. He told me GT has a reputation as being one of the best schools in the country (coming from a guy from Wisconsin).

No better recruiting than that.

It was obviously a proud moment for me.

Welcome to Tech! Great choice Mr. Gilbert.

Not yet. OL's are usually the last to get early offers and the state of Georgia is loaded with top OL talent this year with Little, Claytor, Gilbert, etc.

We just recently became his first offer. UGA had told him this past week verbally that they were going to offer...same with Vandy. Auburn, Alabama, others were texting and calling regularly and trying to get him to visit practices.

As he said in one interview, he would have eventually received offers from all of them, but what was the point...he was just going to pick GT anyway because we had the best combo of academics and athletics.

Our coaches have only offered 7 or 8 OL's so far this year and they are all great...so he was an A-list kid for us. I would bet they hope Claytor pulls the trigger soon also as all reports indicate Gilbert was trying to close him down at practice last night.

Another note on Gilbert, all reports are that he has a huge frame/chest and will easily carry 300 lbs. He was also the AAA state champ in wrestling as a junior.

I believe we are only looking at four o linemen. Clator, Wilson and Little being the other three.

Gilbert will help us with Claytor -

and others we are recruiting. I met him and his Pop at practice on Friday - both are excited about joining the Tech family. It was funny to hear Gilbert cracking on the academic "requirements" that uga speaks to when they host recruits.

Anyway, Gilbert was hanging with Claytor a lot - I told him now that he's committed, he could be one of our best recruiters.

This kid is gonna be a great one, IMO. He could easily play at 300 and his wrestling experience can only help him on the field.

This is a GREAT early pick up by Chan and staff!!

We have offers out to big-time OL's like Pugh and Wisniewski, but Wiz is a long shot.

I just checked and according to Jacketsonline.com, GT's was the only offer he received. Maybe later he would have gotten more. Either way, I hope he is able to help us.

I did not dispute that. I don't care if he got others yet either.

...but he did get a verbal from UGA this week. I know that for a fact.

Maybe so; I guess it was just kept secret and that he'll mention the other offers in the interview they have coming up with him.
Who would you think will be our next commitment?

Others we look good with:

Nic Claytor
Nicolai Shwarzkopf (no offer from us yet)
Roddy Jones
Jonathan Dwyer (grades?)
Patrick Hampton (no offer from us yet)
Patrick Jones (no offer from us yet)
Logan Walls (down to us or BYU, he is Mormon)
Sacoby Carter (waiting on test score)
Lorenzo Edwards (we are in final 3; but he could wait awhile)
Kyle Jackson (we have not offered yet)
Josh Nesbitt (he could wait awhile, but QB's are getting pushed to commit earlier each year because of limited numbers to give)

We are in on tons of WR's and DB's (I will not name all of them here) that are top notch and receiving a lot of attention already. This is typical of the skill positions to get their offers first. We will learn more about who we are separating ourselves with as the spring visits and football camps & combines conclude. We have about offers to about 45 or 50 out there, but many are conditional and we wait on transcripts to come in. When they arrive we either turn up the heat because it is solid, or we move on to the another recruit.

To give you some examples of how well recruiting is going, I already have over 30 names on my hotlist at scout that have at least medium interest in Tech. They are listed as low, high and medium. I'll list below the first 6 on my list that is in alphabetical order and not in order of interest

1. Bo Adebayo - de - Ga., Miss, Miss St. and Tech are on his list. He has medium interest in all of them.

2. Dion Armstrong - dt - Auburn, Clemson, Ga., South Carolina and Tech are on his list. He has high interest in Tech and medium interest in the rest.

3. Malcolm Belim - qb/s - Alabama, Notre Dame, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tech are on his list. He has high interest in Tech and medium in the rest.

4. Antoine Carter - de - Fla., LSU, Miami, Ohio St. and Tech are on his list. He has medium interest in all.

5. Sacoby Carter - de - Fla., Auburn, Clemson, Ga. and Tech are on his list. He has high interest in Tech and Fla. and medium interest in the rest.

6. Nick Clator - ol - Auburn, Clemson, Fla., Vandy, Ga. and Tech are on his list. He has high interest in Tech and medium interest in the rest, with the exception of Ga., which he has low interest.

It's interesting how where a school falls in a recruits list of favorites (high, med, low) is heavily dependent on whter or not one of those schools has actually offered him. A kid that currently rates a school medioum or low, such as in your example, could easily switch that school to "high" if that low school deciced to offer him. We've certainly lost a lot of kids in recent years that got an offer from a top school after we had offered the kid early.

A lot is a bit of an exaggeration. Please give us a list of who we lost besides Batchelor last year.

USuCk is not a "top school" in academics or athletics and yes, I know who their coach is. For that matter, I know who their previous coach was and they weren't a top school then either. Batchelor wanted to be a teacher and said so from the get go. He went to a better fit.

Very little evidence to support your claim. High, med, low is seldom something a recruit actually says, it's more an assessment of the recruiting service based on their conversations. There are examples every year of kids committing to schools that were supposedly low on their lists or not even on their list. Why don't you just give it a rest and watch to see who we get. Then, if they can't play, complain to your heart's content.
