I watched the film on these two last night and was thoroughly impress with both.

Evans....I only wish I could have watched him in spring practice. He literally is a threat to go all the way anytime he has the football. I hope that Gailey and Nix aren't just planning on having Evans in the runningback rotation but are actively trying to design ways to get the ball to him in the open space. All he needs is a sliver of light to take it to the house. He reminds me alot of the small but extremely fast runningbacks that Miami is famous for having.

Kelly: Doggone it. Going against the conventional thinking again but I like his linebacker play more than what I saw at running back. And his running back play is pretty darn good. I'm sure he could be a servicable back. But on defense....his ability to follow the play as it unfolds....step up into a gap....and punish the ballcarrier was a delight to watch. Sheer delight.

I honestly think Evans has a far higher chance of making an immeadiate impact next year at runningback. Kelly at linebacker.

Just my thoughts........

I think Evans is going to be a good one from all I hear and what I saw in his video. There are a lot of RBs in the NFL at his size that do very well.

And with Kelly, I'm just glad he's in W&G. He's going to be a player wherever they put him.

I'm not knocking Kelly at runningback. He is good, he moves piles and he runs hard. He definitly can play in the backfield at the Div 1 level. But having said all that, his ability to read a play and then step up and make the tackle was a sheer delight.

He looks like he would be more effective on defense.

Don't be surprised if he ends up at linebacker.

He was promised to Curtis when he signed his committment. The only way he'll be moved right away is if we have depth problems at lb.

I see Kelly at LB -

long term.

ESPECIALLY if we land 2 of the gaggle of stud RB's we are recruiting this year.

On a previous thread I mentioned that I met Jamall at the airport in February and spent about 30 minutes with him before our flight to Dallas. In a word, he is SOLID. Also, very polite and polished personally.

I can see him "ripping" through the line.

Re: I see Kelly at LB -

If we get two of them, we won't have the luxury of using them till the 2007 season. This year he should be insurance at the rb position. Gause has not repsonded as fast as was expected to his rehab from surgery. He just started running again this week before the baseball games. He wasn't even taking batting practice. Quincy would be the 4th rb. That is important because we have new formations with two backs on the field at the same time.

Re: I see Kelly at LB -

I love Kelly at linebacker. And I see Evans as a preseason ACC Rookie of the Year candidate.

Re: I see Kelly at LB -

Evans will make a big splash at the ND game. He will have a breakout game. I figure he will be good for 50+ yards against ND as a non-starter. I just would like to see all of our RB's get 50-100 against ND. I'd love to see every runningback as a threat on every play. Fresh legs will go a long way with Grant, Choice, and Evans - I assume these are the top 3.

He ran in spring practice like he was a Jr., not an early entry freshman. I was very surprised at how comfortable he looked.

I don't doubt Evan's ability, but barring injury, I just don't see him taking more than a handful of snaps. Since he's small and young, his blocking ability will be suspect and his appearance in the game may signal to ND that certain plays will not be run.

Of course, if he takes 3 snaps and averages 15 yards per, I suppose that could be considered a breakout game!

Re: I see Kelly at LB -

He was a big part of the offense in the spring. He did a good job blocking and was never hurt in high school. If stood next to him or watched him run behind his blokers you would know why. CCG has a lot of confidence in him as does Nix and Curtis. In some formations he was on the field the same time as Choice.

Re: I see Kelly at LB -

Panther: This spring, did Gailey and Nix try to get the ball to Evans on swing passes and such?

Thats really the bottom line. Right now we don't have any young punishing type RB's. We have Jamaal Evans, and Drew Gause. The big-uns we do have our true FB's. None in the mold of Joe Burns, PJ Daniels type of back. Gailey loves to have two distinctly different types of runners at all times.

Jamaal Evans is supposed to be the real deal, but he's 5-8 190lbs. We are recruiting Roddy Jones and Dwyer really hard. Roddy is small like Evans, and Dwyer could possibly be the bigger running back type we need. But more than likely, we will not get Dwyer, from what I have been reading. We have a great shot at Roddy Jones though.

So knowing that we take a RB this year and it will probably be Jones. I see Quincy Kelly staying at RB. And I would be willing to put money on that.

Re: I see Kelly at LB -

Barrel: Quincy Kelly is one helluva linebacker....middle linebacker. He either has the natural instincts of a linebacker or he makes great reads. Or both. He attacks the ballcarriers at and behind the line of scrimmage. Kelly reminds me of a Ray Lewis type linebacker.

I'll be disappointed to see him in the backfield for any reason except for it being necessary numbers wise.

Re: I see Kelly at LB -

SLJ, I'll be willing to make a bet he'll be in the backfield, and it has nothing to do with numbers although in this case, the numbers do support him being at RB. Everyone who has watched him play, from the scouts, to the coaches, thought he was a better RB. A friend of mine who attended the signing day festivities was told by more than one coach that Kelly will be a RB.

Re: I see Kelly at LB -

BOR is right. We do have a pretty fair mlb in Phillip Wheeler. Freshman don't come in and get immediate playing time in Tenuta's system.

Re: Does anyone have the rushing stats on Kelly

Runs a 4.49 40.

Who is expected to be Wheeler's backup?
