How often can I expect to see him with the football against Notre Dame? I hope it is early and often! 7-10 times at least from the line of scrimmage...10-13 times if he is the punt/kick return man. I think he is actually more of a breakaway threat than Calvin Johnson will be.

He can take alot of heat off Reggie and Calvin, forcing the defense of Notre Dame to readjust on the fly. It could be a helluva rockum sockum night!

He did impress during the spring, but is still the 3rd string back. He will probably not see the field much, if at all, against the Irish...with his carries increasing as the season goes along.

I think you would have to wait to see what happens in fall camp before you make a statement like that. Grant really wasn't that far ahead of Evans. We'll be using some two back sets so he should see some action.

Re: I tend to agree with Joe on this, but

you just never know how things will shake out during fall practice and summer workouts.

Things always change come fall. The practices are different. THere is so much more urgancy. Normally the more mature players seperate themselves from the younger ones. That's not always the case, but I've seen many young guys come in and make a huge splash in spring then it's different come fall. Don't get me wrong, I'm pulling for Jamaal, but I want the best players to play.

Go Jackets!!

If I had to guess, we try to find a way to get Evans on the field 'with' Choice or Grant.

We'll put the 5 best ball carriers on the field each play and in some situations a tailback like Evans at flanker will make more sense than a 3rd or 4th guy in a reciever or TE spot.

We won't give up a great blocker who can run and catch like Cox most of the time, but a 2nd tailback spot or slot position for Evans and/or Grant would be likely (at times) if I had to guess. I'd expect Grant to play a lot in leiu of Choice, much like Choice did for PJ.

We'll find a way to get the 5 best ball threats on the field. Depending on the situation, it's gonna be Calvin, Choice, and for the next 3 - a host of other combinations with Cox a 'lot', JJ, Dunlap, big Demaryus Thomas, other WR's, 1 or 2 TE's at a time, and the now - very deep, tailback crew.

Heck - the way we run Calvin - he's off the field at times. When that happens, we need guys like Evans and/or Grant in there somewhere with Choice plus the best of the next 4 instead of 3. Grant has already proven he can play slot, so I'd expect him or Evans there at times.

To me, the faster, bigger version of Grant, and the explosive Evans both are almost too good not to each play a part of that mix, even if not just to keep fresh legs while Choice gets a breather.

State, to be honest I hope to see a couple of receivers step up to relieve the double team pressure off of CJ. If that happens then your going to see a wide open offense.

It's my hope that Reggie will have the confidence to throw to these guys early, then dink a couple to the TE and then see CJ going across the middle.

For now I see those two areas that I hope progress well when summer practice hits.

I see Evans as a key to opening up the offense. In the status quo offense of the last few years it is unlikely that Jamaal would see much of the field. But Nix is opening up the offense and he will need the players to accomplish this on the field, not the sideline.

As for his blocking.....I thought it had been established that Evans can more than pull his weight blocking.

and remember that Grant is looking better than ever and is starting to show signs of why he was the #1 All-Purpose Back in the country out of high school.

He has put on weight and learn to read what is happening a little better, which should hopefully help him from getting hurt so easy.

As a Rashaun Grant fan, I am excited to see what he can do with the ball this year.

I want to see Choice, Grant, and Evans get a fair of touches....Choice and Grant: Handoffs, pitches, etc. Evans: Anyway possible....handoffs, pitches, screens, middle sceens, passes out of the backfield and from the slot....etc, etc...the kid is a touchdown maker.

In all honesty....In my senario Evans will divert alot of the pressure from Calvin and Reggie. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/drinking.gif

I am also a Grant fan. The few times he returned kicks (I am in one of the new sections - 120, a great close look) he seemed almost relaxed before the play, cool as a cucumber. He's gonna be a good one this year. I don't think he has any fear out there.

Evans is a bowling ball that looks durable. I think if we can rotate in fresh legs every so often, it may make the difference - especially during that last regular season game against the mutts. During that game, there looks to be two sides that will have deep stables of running backs.

If Evans is a 'bowling ball', then he is a bowling ball with afterburners. My estimate is that he will be the fastest of all our Jackets this fall. Faster than Kenny Scott, faster than Calvin Johnson.

In fact, a dandy footrace would be next summer....one with Evans matching up with Brad Jefferson. Woooweee.

I'm not sure how any of us fans, even the ones who went to a few spring practices, can guess how good Jamaal Evans will be for game 1. Making demands on how much and in what way he should get football before he's ever stepped foot on the field is a bit premature, especially since we have 2 good proven RB's in front of him.

I seriously doubt Jamaal Evans plays against Notre Dame. That comment has nothing to do with his ability or a knock against him, but Gailey has two experienced backs who are quality backs that have been in big games and are leaders. I want them carrying the rock for me... not a freshman.

Unless he's a Hershel Walker clone!

But, yeah, I would be really surprised if he totes the rock in the first game, barring injury to Choice or Grant.

I will actually be surprised if he doesn't play against ND. I figure some 3rd or 4th quarter action when we have put the game out of reach. Now let's hit 'em a lick Tech! I want to send Notre Dame spiraling into an abyss that the program will not recover from.

I also want to see Navy end the L streak to ND in a huge way.

If Tech is commited to getting the ball into the hands of the guys doing the most with it, which before the 1st game will be in the fall practice and scrimmages...........then Jamaal Evans will play and play alot!

I hope Evans is as good as we think and has a great career at Tech. That said, I hope that between Choice and Grant we don't need him this year. Not a knock on Evans but that would mean our running attack is humming with those two guys and we can bring him along more slowly or RS him. But if we need him or if he's better than either of them, then by all means get him on the field.
