Looks like we've got a good shot of getting him...according to his comments on jacketsonline.com....

Anyone got any "insider information", I say we get him based on some of the comments floating around out there..... I hope so the kid has solid numbers & say's he had a great visit...ANY ONE BULER???:fingersx:

239lbs seems small for an OT. Offers from Houston, Tulsa, Utah, Iowa State. Did not receive an offer from Texas Tech or Arkansas.

I like his coach's comments on Scout, but other than that, is there a reason to get overly excited about this guy? I'm not trying to dog him, just trying to see what the big deal is. Is he a cut block specialist or something? Did he play in a veer option offense in HS? Anything to make him stand out?

The reason I'm excited about him (and, honestly, all the commitments) is because GT coaches want him on the team.

This year, there are some guys we could recruit, but we don't because we don't feel they'll fit in (a few high rated ones). So, that shows me GT is recruiting only players they really like.

That's why I'm excited about Edwards.

This is a circular argument. Clearly the GT coaches want everyone on the team to which they've given an offer. Does that mean you're "excited" about every recruit? I suppose I can see "yes" as a legitimate answer.

Perhaps I should have rephrased my question ... "Is there a reason I should be more excited about this guy than any other recruit to whom we've given an offer?"

Again, I'm not harshing the guy, just curious what sets him apart.

More information on Edwards

Jared's measurables are, 6 foot 4 inches tall, 240 lbs and 4.9 in the Fourty. He actually played both ways in High School on the O Line and the D Line. On defense his numbers were 18 tackles, 4 forced fumbles, one returned for a TD, and 3 sacks. That was half way through his HS season. I do not have his year end numbers.

He committed to Iowa State early but has been looking around recently and has several schools interested. I think the Giff Smith sees him as an Adamm Oliver type of player. High Energy motor that will fight to get to the ball carrier.

He is going to Baylor early this week and then he will make his decision. Looks pretty good for Tech but you never know.

Go Jackets!

What sets him apart is that he is the recruit of this time period. If the coaches are excited and want him then I am excited and want him, regardless of his "numbers".

No offense to Beernuts, but this arguement is absolutely the lamest reason for being "excited" about recruiting. This was the Hive Mantra for 4 years of Dave Wilson/ Chan Gailey recruiting that sucked enormously. We handed out some real winner schollies to kids that quite frankly aren't even close to D-1 talent.

This is like saying that the reason you are so excited about today is that you woke up. Based on your criteria of being excited about recruiting, it doesn't matter if we handed out scholarships to crap players or great players, you've based your opinion on the fact that we handed them a scholly, and they accepted it. I guess we should always no matter what "trust the coaches". If we did that, Gailey would still be our coach.

I'm not saying that recruiting this year sucks. It doesn't. I think PJ is doing a great job in a transition year and already better than 5 of Gailey's 6 recruiting classes.

No offense to BOR, but I think the fact that I woke up this morning is a great reason to be excited. I would have been greatly upset if I didn't.

Of course if you need a little more info about me, I believe that every day is a gift from God and we're guaranteed nothing.

BOR, what do I know about any recruit? I know only what I read about him from other fans like me, or possibly from a scouting service. Usually, that's very little, unless it's a highly rated one. I was really excited about landing Travis Chambers a few years ago. Why? Because other fans were too. Not really a good reason.

In the end, I know hardly anything about most of our recruits. Why should I be excited about any of them? Because of measurables, which may or may not be correct? I put little stock into those.

BOR, outside of the highly sought after players, why are you excited about any recruits? How much do you really know about them?

And, hey, I'm STILL excited about Jared Edwards.

Beer, you've got it right. We have two choices in life, be excited about recruits or not. I choose the glass is half full personally, particularly since every recruits' status is determined via internet squabbling instead of actually knowing how they fit into OUR program.

I don't get too excited about recruiting as I don't know much about these kids. They all seem like good players. I have always believed that for the most part the average kid doesn't make an impact on his football team until he is in his 20's. Between 18 and 20 a LOT of stuff can happen to closen the parity in college football athletes. While the recruiting services are entertaining, they certainly don't matter one lick in my opinion.

I've seen enough high star players that never did anything and for everyone of them there are four low star players that made the NFL.

But back to your question. I am excited in the new football staff and I am excited to see how they compete on the field.

Is BOR mellowing, or did he just get his prescription refilled?

The only time you'll ever see me get upset about recruiting is when it is apparently obvious we are not trying to market ourselves to the best players available. This would describe the Dave Wilson years.
