A peach of a decision: Anoai heading to Georgia Tech

Joe Anoai could hardly contain his excitement when Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey visited his home.

The former coach of the Dallas Cowboys, the man who had coached Emmitt Smith and faced some of the best professional football players in the world was in his living room, trying to convince him to come become a Yellow Jacket.

"What he's seen and the kind of players he's been around," Anoai said. "It's amazing."

His mom, Lisa, wasn't as impressed.

"I didn't know who he was," she said. "He was just another coach to me. He was very nice, though."

That combination of a football crazy son and a mother who was worried about everything else besides the game helped Joe and Lisa Anoai find the right school.

Joe played linebacker for Escambia, but his size (6-3, 230- pounds) and quickness made him a brighter prospect at defensive end.

When he decided which schools to visit, all three (Georgia Tech, South Florida and Louisville) had a defensive system that took advantage of speed rushers off the edge. Joe met with potential teammates, talked to coaches as to how he'd fit into their schemes and got a taste of each city's nightlife.

His mom had other concerns.

"Mostly I was looking at who had a lot to offer education- wise," Lisa Anoai said. "Georgia Tech definitely had the edge there. They had a wonderful academic advisors to make sure he's passing all his classes and to make sure he was doing well outside of football."

Georgia Tech's Atlanta campus also meant that the school was closer than Joe's other finalists.

Still, in the end, it was his decision.

Lisa and her son sat down and looked at the pros and cons of every school. They set up a scale of 1-10 for different categories and ranked the three finalists. They then added up the scores.

"I just wanted him to go where he would be the happiest," Lisa said.

For Joe, that meant the school where he had a chance to play right away. For his mother, it was the school where he'd be closest to home and get the best education.

They both came to the same conclusion: Georgia Tech.
