They had him on 680 apparently he's starting a new show with the station.. he alluded to tech can't be consistent top ten under current coaching staff because of the misconception that tech needs elite students.. said any ncaa kid can get into tech that we don't have to have the 3.9 GPA high school kid.. I didn't catch the whole thing anyone else head it?

Dude is butthurt he got passed over for a coaching job on Johnson’s staff

I suppose they could just chain themselves together, would make it harder for someone to actually kick them out (gotta make them work for it), plus would show team solidarity and would be a great deal for chain makers too. 99% is just not good enough, we have higher standards at Tech. 99.9% or bust!

Didn't he get a shot with the AA and smoke it away?
He got rehired even after that as a recruiting assistant. But he wanted to be on the field as a coach and didn’t get that opportunity so he left to go start his own private coaching thing.

Tech has like a 99% retention rate these days. Getting in and staying in are functionally equivalent.
Tech has a 95% first year retention rate IIRC. I think that it is somewhat bullshit though; it takes 3 grading periods to flunk out and there are only 2 in a normal academic year.

The "look to your left, look to your right" mentality is definitely gone and the 6 year graduation rate at 84% is higher than back in the day.

Are students getting better, or Tech getting watered down? As usual, probably a bit of both. A third option might be that Tech is treating students better than they treated us.

Although, it's probably Vad Lee.

I mean, if you have teenaged kids, you've seen how competitive scholastics is now.....that may be having the effect of providing elite school with ever more qualified and capable applicants.

Tech has taken weed out courses down a big notch because retention rate is part of the calculation in college rankings and like most schools it’s all about rankings now not about quality. Ask old Harvard grads what they think about the new Harvard.

Little of column A, little of column B. It’s harder to get in now, so they want to retain the kids that get in. It also looks good on college rankings.

I think GT is attracting and admitting higher quality students than 'back in the day'. I don't think the academics are getting watered down; but the 'survival skills' GT developed back in the day must have taken the hit. GT treated students pretty poorly back then; but surviving that abuse had its own value. GT seems to be emphasizing CO-OP more than they did back when I was a student, and there is most definitely more encouragement to study abroad.

I wonder if GT today could recruit a Joe Hamilton clone and kept him eligible?

Actually GT Is easier than it was. The new applicant process makes it seem like GT is tougher

So you're saying it wouldn't be hard to keep a Joe Hamilton type eligible. I agree that GT is easier for admitted students with a 30+ ACT score; just not sure how easy it is for someone with half that qualification coming in.

It isn't about higher quality students means better retention, it s a fundamental change in grading policy, this change makes it easier to keep all students in, including atheletes.

Yes I'm saying it's easier. They've got alot more help with academics than they used too
