I have been lurking on the forum for about 3 years. Have rarely posted. But I am stuggling with something and would like some opinions.

I like Johnson. But...why would he pick GT over SMU? SMU is offering more money and he has "guaranteed success" at SMU. They won 1 game this year. If he goes there and wins 4 or 5 games, he'll be a hero.

At GT, he would likely be getting less money, the expectations are much higher, the conference is much tougher and his arch rival is one of the top programs in the country. Not to mention that UGA has has dominated the series for the past 6 years.

I really hope Johnson comes to GT. Because the alternatives make me nervous. But the decision he has in front of him seems like a no-brainer to me.

Any thoughts on this.

I think if he has any ego about him, any sense of wanting to compete with the best - then why would he ever want SMU? If he wants to make a lot of money coaching at a backwater program, why not stay at Navy where you're already loved or go home to NC and be the next failure at Duke.

BTW, I doubt 4-5 wins is going to cut it with the swinging dicks at SMU who are ponying up the $10M.

I hope he realizes he can be very successful here. But he also is sure to notice we just axed a quality coach because he couldn't get much beyond 7 wins. If I'm looking at our program from the outside, I might be thinking we are crazy to expect a level of success that GT hasn't been able to sustain in almost 50 years.

If a coach would rather lead a team in a non-bcs conference than a team that has been to 11 straight bowls in a BCS league, I don't want them coaching our team.

If Johnson comes to Tech I'll be excited--I have a very high opinion of him.

If he goes to SMU, then I'll have been wrong--he isn't as competitive as I thought--and I'll believe we dodged a bullet.

That's a neat way of looking at things..:)

Wow. Very well said.

What Johnson needs to think about is that if he goes to SMU and recruits well enough to create the Navy of the plains or whatever, the idiot SMU big money fans who have been hibernating for 20 years will rear their heads and put them right back on probation. Ultimate death penalty. They just can't help it. Once they have a little success they'll get envious of Texas again and they just won't be able to help it. So if he ever wins, he'll be right in the middle of another huge scandal.

Then again, he can go to SMU build the program without being secondguessed by a fickle fanbase and cash in at UT, A&M, Neb, Bama, or anywhere else willing to pony up $4M-$5M three years from now.

I read a quote a few years ago where Johnson said "I will never leave NAVY unless it's for a school where I can win a BCS Championship"

That makes me think SMU is out of the picture. BUT, when he said that there was nobody waving 2Million in his face! Who knows, this whole thing is about to make me sick though.
