Rivals just updated their 2019 rankings and pushed Yates up to the #6 Dual Threat QB in the class while also adding the 4th star.

Still wouldn’t mind getting a decent grad transfer QB to bridge us into 2020, but as I’ve been saying on here a lot, our current roster is not as barren as some would have you think.

Damn, a GT commit actually gains a star instead of dropping one....times, they are a changing.

Wow. After suffering through some pretty rough quarterback play recently, CPJ managed to sign 4 star QBs in back-to-back classes, and never got a chance to use either of them. Agree 100% on our roster being far from barren. We've got a ton of young talent on defense, and lots of great options at QB - both this year and going forward. We'll legitimately have 4 guys with legit claims for the job.

Oliver - Lots of experience and won some big games, but passing is questionable at best. Bonus is ability to play another position.
Johnson - Probably the favorite for the job due to passing ability, but returning from injury and no real game experience.
Graham - Highly touted freshman, but academic concerns and no experience. Bonus is ability to play another position.
Yates - Another good fit for a spread offense, rather than the option. Great talent, but will be tough to win the job as a true freshman.

My guess is Johnson wins the job, Oliver switches positions, Graham is backup, and Yates redshirts. Maybe Oliver stays at QB if Graham can't turn it around in the classroom. I think Yates is the future at QB, just don't know if he can win the job quite yet.

There isn't a grad transfer out there worth it. Lucas Johnson and Tobias Oliver need to get to work on mechanics, recognizing defensive sets, and progressions.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't Graham a 4star "athlete" and not rated for his QB play?
My guess is either Graham or Oliver change positions. Graham gets a look at slot and Oliver at S if they don't win the backup job behind Johnson.

Graham was rated as an athlete, but he's a much better passer than what we've seen recently. He was offered by Auburn, UGA, Michigan, Miami, etc. as an athlete, just to give you an idea of how athletic he is.

The biggest transition is going to be the line of scrimmage.

There are a few, but not many, high school quarterbacks that enter P5 programs as proficient passers. They may have talent, they may have potential, but they have to be taught the mechanics and the nuances of the major college passing game. They all need coaching from the first day they land on campus. Tua needed coaching, Will Grier needed coaching, Sam Darnold needed a little coaching. Somehow we thought our quarterbacks could be adequate passers without being taught how to do it. I don't know that the new staff has the coaching skills to make these guys college quarterbacks, but there are signs that they might. It appears we have at least a couple of players that have potential. But you can't just hand them the football and say go throw it toward Brad Stewart.

Can he bring some receivers with him? They look pretty good on film.

    repetition helps too.

It's like golf: You can't roll a few 5-footers in on the practice green and then expect to bang 'em in for par on the 17th with a 1-stroke lead on Sunday.

Honestly, this is CPJ 3rd”ish” 4* star QB he didn’t get to use. Jaylend Ratliffe, by all reports,
from the Rivals people, was getting a bump and was a guaranteed Rivals 250 player. Hopefully, that black cat has left the Edge building

Unless Yates improves his accuracy and decision making, he won’t be the future QB.

As for our roster overall- we’re small and not as good as *you* think. No doubt about it.

Semantics are my life, but is it up to Yates to improve his accuracy and decision making? Or is it up to the coaches to improve Yates' accuracy and decision making?
