If anyone could tell you about JP Mason's lower body strength, passion, and energy, it would definitely be Kirby Smart.

On the other hand, Georgia’s defense will also have to handle Tech running back Jordan Mason and an offensive line that is continuing to improve. UGA coach Kirby Smart called the ACC’s fifth-leading rusher “an amazing back” Monday at his weekly news conference.

“He’s physical, low to the ground,” Smart said. “He runs mad. And he’s thick. He’s heavier than the backs that we’ve faced and has great strength in his lower body. I just respect his running passion and his energy. I love watching him run, and he does it the right way.”

Well I guess he has to find something positive to say about our team. Considering his team faces ridiculously good backs weekly in the SEC, I cant imagine he is worried about Mason.

I've always wondered what is Mason's 40? He looks around 4.7ish to me.
 
Nothing to see here. Kirby does this every week. He comes from the Saban tree...Saban always goes out of his way to talk up his current opponent. Kirby is trying to not have his team and the media look to LSU and forget that there is still one game before then.

I agree Mason is a good player...but Kirby isn't complimenting him because of that. He has ulterior motives, as he attempts to motivate his defense.
 
I don’t care that Smart said it. “He runs mad” is a good description of Mason. I like it!

Is this serious? Mason will get an NFL contract. He’s definitely of that caliber if he stays healthy and continues to put in the work.

I love Jordan Mason. But an NFL contract isn't a guarantee, even if he stays healthy and puts in the work. The speed question is going to be a real concern for NFL scouts and I would guess the 4.7 40-time isn't too far off.

I would love to see him get one, though. I just don't believe it's a foregone conclusion.

I'm obviously not an NFL scout but Mason looks like your typical very good college player who isnt quite NFL caliber but a solid player at the college level. That is no slight on him because it's just hard as hell to make the league. My 4.7/4.8 40 yard dash estimate is based upon his relative speed vs defensive backs who are typically no worse than 4.6. He ain't outrunning any DBs so that's loosely where I got the 4.7 time in my head. There are very few NFL backs that slow and even fewer who get drafted. A good comparison is Elijah Holyfield last year for UGA. He had a very productive career at UGA and was projected as a day 2 draft pick this year. He bombed at the NFL combine by running a 4.8 and fell all the way to undrafted FA. He never made an NFL roster.

Mason is a lot more than his straight line speed. His cut backs, vision, and gains after contact are all traits that are extraordinarily hard to teach. Look at Sony Michel as an example who meets all prototype dimensions, speed and strength, but he just can’t find his running lanes or break any tackles, and is therefore limited. Mason’s ability to do these things behind very average OL play this year (relative to other RBs with similar production/grade) and his youth really show some potential if he can stay healthy and continue to work — you can train better speed.

I like the way he runs, too. Hate to say it but with a better line he'd be killing it. Next year?
 
Why, a few days before the Georgia game, are we speculating that our best player may not make the NFL?

How does this kind of talk help us in any way? He’s done great. If he gets a chance with an NFL team, he might take the gift he’s displaying for us and become a big star. He seems to have a valuable intangible quality.

As for Kirby Smart, when he looks at us, he’s having one horrible thing go through his mind: South Carolina.
