Just 12 scholarships for 2010

Better question is why are the coaches planning to sign only 12 players? Probation is over last I checked and we should be signing a full complement of athletes.
 
I'm sure they'll be normal attrition and injuries. Those things will add to the 12.

If I understand things correctly PJ intends to redshirt at least 50% of each incoming class.

That means we will have slightly smaller classes each year, assuming a high retention rate (which is more of an expectation as important as winning, academically speaking, than an assumption).
 
That's what happens when you have such a young team like Tech. You can't give schollies if they aren't there to give.
 
We're only losing 7 scholly seniors, guys. You only have 85 to give. If nobody is leaving, then none are freed up for high schoolers. It sucks that we have these lopsided classes, because there are a lot of '10ers that are high speed that we could get.

You can only use the scholarships you have. You know, 85 total?
 
It will be more than that. I expect a couple of people like perkins to count towards this years class. Maybe a transfer or two. Then somebody could go pro. I expect about 15.
 
The coaches are just throwing 12 out there right now....and rightfully so...to let recruits know it will be a smaller class.

When we sign 22 kids Wednesday...we will have 81 on scholarship. We only have 7 seniors next year on scholarship....that leaves 11 spots.

1 of this years 22 can count toward last year (Dieke) and Perkins enrolling early can allow him to count toward the class we sign Wednesday. However...remember that our problem next year will not be the 25 per year max...it will be the 85 total max...so what class they count towards will be irrelevant as I do not see us getting anywhere near 25 anyway.

Attrition will open up a couple spots...but is not always a good thing as there is a reason you recruited them in the first place!

The management of scholarships must be a little bit like managing the salary cap in the pros. Which signee counts in which year is a mystery to me. But fully stocking the redshirt cupboard takes a couple of classes, doesn't it? Once we have 12 or 14 redshirts (on scholarship) perpetually, each year we'll sign about a dozen high school incoming redshirts and move the previous year's redshirts onto the varsity roster.

If everyone redshirted...and no one ever had to move to medical status, flunk out, quit the game, or transfer....exactly 17 signees per year would give you a constant 85 max. That is not reality though.
 
So, I'm guessing we'll only have room for one more running back (2 more at the VERY most)?

who knows at this point...too early...depends on what talent is out there and what their interest is as well.

We also will recruit a lot of "athletes" that could start at one position and move around. It remains to be seen where Tevin Washington will end up...and where the three incoming QB's will end up.

There is alot that can happen in the next year.
 
12 + attrition = 18 or 20, likely. PJ was talking after the UNC game like he planned on running some guys off who were sucking it up effort-wise.

That is what I love about Paul Johnson and Tech. The greatest thing that ever happened to me at Tech was failing my first test, going to the professor to talk about it, and him totally ignoring me. There is no one in the real world to push your effort to the outstanding level, just yourself.
 
Now be clear, he did not say "I'm going to run some of these slackers off." He inferred it. He said something like, "well, at Navy they play football because they want to. Around here we've got some players who are just playing for the scholarship," and then he said something like "well, I don't expect a lot of guys to make it through spring drills, so I think we'll be able to take a pretty full class in 2010." He also said, "there's a lot of guys around here who don't have to work hard because they're not at risk of losing their starting spot."

All of that, following the game where Greg Smith got benched for good, seems to indicate to me that he (as merely one example) might have a hard time getting back in the good graces of the coaching staff, and might be better off transferring. I suspect (no inside knowledge here) that there's a half dozen other guys in a similar boat.
