Just Look At The Numbers

I've read all of the debates on the situation with Nesbitt / Shaw. I know Nesbitt is a "better athlete". I also agree with some of the statements CPJ has made about the "backup" quarterback. You can't break the confidence of your starter everytime that he makes a mistake by jerking him out. I've also heard that Nesbitt is more consistent in practice than Shaw.

I decided to pull together the game statistics for Nesbitt and Shaw for the year. It is interesting. For those that look at these numbesr and say "Shaw played 2 of our weakest opponents"...I'll remind you that Duke destroyed UVA earlier this year (31-3...I believe). Shaw is a very solid quarterback. And statistically...he has performed very solid. Just based on the numbers...he has been more solid than Nesbitt. I know statistics dont' drive all coaching decisions. But...they are certainly 1 metric that can be used to evaluate the quarterback situation. I'm not sure how much playtime Jaybo will get the remainder of the year if Josh stays healthy. Fact is...our last 4 games will all likely be "tight" games. If nothing else...we can all rest easy that if we have to call on our backup quarterback...he will deliver (based on the numbers). Would Jaybo be this consistent if he'd played 5 games instead of 2+? Will he get any more playing time this year if Josh is healthy? Is Jaybo better equipped to run the TO than Nesbitt? Look at the numbers and develop your own opinion.

Passing
Nesbitt / Shaw
Pass Effcy- 28 of 60 - 46.7% / 15 of 23 – 65.2%
Yards- 463 / 321
TDs- 2 / 2
Long- 42 / 88
Yards/Pass- 16.5 / 21.4

Rushing
Nesbitt / Shaw
Att/Gains- 94/490 / 36/149
Yards Lost- 115 / 24
Net Yards- 375 / 125
Yds/Carry- 4 / 3.5
TDs- 6 / 3
Long- 34 / 43
Fumbles- 5 / 1

Very interesting. I still like Nesbitt in there, but the fumbles worry me. 2 turnovers last week in UVA territory. We can't afford that from here on out.

you can't just look at numbers. we all know that. you must put the number in perspective. nesbitt is our man. we all know he has more upside. jaybo is good. really good. i wouldn't mind seeing him in there for a couple of series, but he's simply not on josh's level.

The simple difference is that the teams that Josh has faced as a starter (JSU [I wouldn't really count them], BC, VT, Climpsun, and UVA) had much better defensive fronts than the team Jaybo faced as a starter (MSU, Duke).

If Jaybo is in for any of those games, especially the VT, BC, and Climpsun games, he gets tackled for a loss every other play.

Pointless exercise. Josh has played against the tougher teams on the schedule (don't even talk abou the UVA/Duke score). Your stats also don't include how many times the ball was put on the ground by each. Jaybo fumbles pretty much as much as Josh but has been fortunate in being able to get back on most of them. This is a moot point anyway. Both will likely play some and hopefully both will play well.

The only really relevant numbers to compare are the numbers each player ran up vs Mississippi State, and Jacksonville State, since those were their only common opponents.

Do a summary of those and see what you get, in terms of yards per carry / yards per pass attempt / etc.

Nesbitt has the opportunity to be something absolutely special in this offense, and the biggest thing he needs right now, aside from better blocking, is experience. Putting Shaw in, even for limited snaps, would be taking that potential experience away from Nesbitt. Keep in mind folks, this isn't all about this year. Yes we have a chance for a very good season, but we are also young. With the exception of our d-line, the core of this group will be returning next year as well, and I would like for that to be successful as well as opposed to going into "OMG, win now mode". The calls for Shaw are premature. Nesbitt will be a beast in this offense, mark my words.

It's a reasonable assumption.
I'm not convinced. Go back to the MSU game. They had a ferocious pass rush but Jaybo avoided taking sacks by getting the ball off quickly (once for a TD pass) even though he got levelled several times. On running plays, he had quick enough feet to avoid a sack even if his 'yards after contact' numbers aren't as high as JN's.

I'm not advancing the idea that JN shouldn't be starting but I am disagreeing with the idea that Jaybo can't run the offense against a team with a good front seven. Let's be honest - Jaybo put some serious points on the board when he started and say what you want about MSU's and Duke's front lines but they were in our backfield all day long.

I do not believe the dropoff between JN and JS is as big as some are suggesting.

This is an endless debate. The fact of the matter is that CPJ has already chosen who is going to start this year and the next 2. Jaybo is only going to step in when Nesbitt gets injured and possibly play when he is a senior if he stays until then.

We don't have a quarterback controversy. The best QB is the starter. With that said, Jaybo is a hell of a backup! With the #25 QB in the nation coming here next season we should be set for a little while, the only thing we dont have is a 4.3 speed QB.

Think either will redshirt next year, once we get Tevin off redshirt as a backup?

Shaw has experience with the system, Nesbitt doesn't. Once Nesbitt gets that same experience it will become obvious why he's the starter.

Just what the heck does this Paul Johnson know about QBs anyway?

Does he think he is chan gailey or something?
