When you look at our roster, there are few right now that fit the profile of an option QB. PJ will immediatley look at our roster for guys that fit his offensive scheme.
IMHO we have only 1 QB on the roster that fit's his style of offense (Whatever version it ultimatley is, it will have a lot of option and without looking at a possible incoming Frosh. Im sure he will snag one this recruiting season, maybe not a highly recruited one) Nesbitt is the only QB we have that fit's the option mold. Grades?? It would be a big blow, if we lose him.

Look for Reese to possibly move over. If you look at Navy's QB's they were mostly 5'11 shifty types. Like Reese, who played QB in HS.

Nesbitt would have the best shot at QB this Spring if he is available.
We need a few more option types asap on our roster.

Look for PJ to adapt his offense to the players - not the players to the offense.

He will not adapt to a straight drop back passing scheme we just saw this past year under Gailey with Bennett. You can take that to the bank!

I hope you are right.

That is what im hearing.

Wes had a good interview today on 790 the dawg zone radio.

He had some interesting points, PJ will NOT run the triple option (No need for anyone to worry about that) But he will have a lot of option in his offenses.

Look for Nesbitt to be the man, with one or two possible moves on our roster. Reese looks to be a natural at QB and running the option.

Bennett won' be an option I don't think....I can't see him adapting that much. But if Renfree sticks with him he's reportedly athletic enough that PJ can build something around him. But I think you're original point is a good one. There are some guys on the roster who may have experience in HS at QB that most of us don't know about who may emerge as options.

good point 1gtfan...

We will still run a variation of the option, but I think it will be a spread/read-option where the QB will need to be mobile but also throw the football.

Nesbitt is suited perfectly for the WVU-style offense, but Reese hasn't thrown the ball in years and likely won't have the passing ability to be considered.
Maybe if we bring in Jaybo Shaw or Pat White's lil brother they would work out, but this is all speculation because we don't know what PJ's plan is yet.

I expect Josh Nesbitt to be the QB next year thanks to his legs, he will be the fastest QB Johnson has seen since at GSU lol.

I agree with most of what you said, BUT, with one spring under Johnson, Reese would be a good back-up to Nesbitt, until we recruit a few more.

That's a good point.

After hearing about his pass-oriented offense and Hawaii, and clearly his option at Navy, Renfree is looking better and better by the second as a QB (assuming he has the athleticism that he is said to have). I really hope we can get him.

They really weren't pass oriented at Hawaii except for his first year there.

Have you guys seen Renfree run? He's got 4.5 speed and an awesome arm.

He'll do well ... like Alex Smith.

Think we're fine with

Nesbitt, Renfree and adding Jaybo Shaw with possible other roster moves. Not my first choice as HC, but definitely think we could have done way worse with some of the other candidates on the short list.

I hope we still get him. He could redshirt and have 2 years to play after Nesbitt graduates. :fingersx:

TO be honest guys Renfree is a traditional, pro-style dropback QB. He has good footwork in the pocket and excellent mechanics with a quick release, which -- along with his accuracy -- is why he is so highly coveted.

But, he certainly does not have the mobility to operate any read-option attack because he is not a threat to run.

With that being said, PJ could employ a spread option that relies more on quick reads and decision-making from the QB (a la "Hatch Attack," Mizzou, Texas Tech) that Renfree would thrive in. This would be a departure from the WVU-style offense we're expecting or his Hawaii offense, which was actually a run-heavy offense as well that only threw the ball because he inherited QBs that couldn't run...

[see: http://thebirddog.wordpress.com/2007/10/15/ka-moolelo-o-ke-kulele-hawaii/]

PJ shouldn't have a problem getting the type of athletes he wants at QB here at Tech, but there is no reason to believe he will adapt his offense to Renfree's skills because that is simply not his MO. We brought PJ in because he has a track recording of designing a winning, powerful offense, so we should give him free reign to decide what that entails and the personnel he wants to employ it...

Are you eluding to the fact that Nesbitt is having trouble academically at GT?? Source?

yikes....wonder if that would force him to transfer or for PJ to sit down with him early on & ask him what his intentions are....buckle down or you going to want to transfer?

I dunno, but let's try and not blow anything up yet..it was literally like one sentence worth of a comment and nothing ever seemed to come of it.
