Re: Ken Whisenhunt\'s

Ain't dat da truf!!!!! What a joy it would bee!! We are losing WR recruits due to our offense. If that doesn't wake up our AD and Co., I don't know what will. I wish a big-time recruit would actually come out and say why he changed his mind....that our offense s--ks!!!

Re: Ken Whisenhunt\'s

I would not say we are losing WR recruits due to our offense..good grief. We got Greg Smith and Martin Frierson last year...and at least Corey Earls this year.

While we missed out on one target (RJ to ND) and DT is now considering others...we are not lacking at this position.

I will also add that DT was always a UGA/SEC guy...and his coaches are BIG-TIME UGA fans...the odds have always been against us with him...but it is not over yet.

Now...the overall recruiting class this year is solid with some players that will contribute heavily...but it does lack some "wow" to it. We just need to address the strategy of having too few kids visit and have the entire staff work harder on the trails..not just a handful.

I do expect big things from Marius, Evans, Earls, Bowen, Tongo, Kelly, Barrick, and Matthews by the time they are sophomores.

You are absolutely right, and not just about this kid. In the south, (Fla. doesn't count as The south) most boys grow up wanting to play in the sec.
In order for Tech to be able to compete for top southern talent, we have to be viewed as a heads and shoulders better place to be for them. In short, we would have to have a guy like Spurrier to win the kids that don't necessarily want Tech from their childhood.

By us being in the acc in Atlanta, Ga., the deck is stacked horribly against us. It's already been written, but kids down here are influenced by their friends, but in most cases their high school coaches. These high school coaches will predominantly be southern guys with a teaching certificate. I really don't think many of them will be Tech fans. A few, sure, but very few.

I don't have an answer. We score next to zero points. Big time offensive playmaker recruits just have to look at the fact that we have one of the very best receivers in the country, and he can't even get the ball. Even with CJ, we can't sign a QB. If we could, somebody else would be playing, right?

I am so tired of this. Nobody at the switch is even trying to make us better.

This is what I've always said, if you're not the University of College football in your state then you're always recruiting kids that grew up idolizing your rival, add the academic requirements and the problem is just compounded.

But back to Ken Whisenhunt, congrats on a job well done, wish you were here running the Offense, but I get the feeling he will soon be a Head Coach somewhere (in the NFL) and the only way for us to get him would be on a Pete Carrol, Steve Spurrier crash and burn type rebound hire.

That's what Dodd said when he was AD. He said GT doesn't stand a chance. The odds are far too great. That was the main reason he got us put of the SEC.

You know what? Dodd was wrong. Homer Rice, Booby Ross, Geoge O'Leary (think what he could have done with a defensive coordinator), Cremins, Hewitt, Blackmon, Heppler, Morris, Hall, Groslimond, Shelton ALL have proved him wrong. If GT is so behind the 8-ball then how do you explain those phenominal successes? It may be harder but in many ways Tech is unique enough to attract talent (from the talent rich area) that most other schools can't.

Most of the SEC, ACC, PAC 10, Big Ten schools can't boast athletic programs as sucessful as GT's over the last 20 years (in the sports we compete)...

Re: Ken Whisenhunt\'s

What you have to do is generate some excitement. You aren't going to overcome that State U, syndrome in the short term, but you can start to balance the field if there's a lot of positive energy around your program.

Look at basketball as an example. Kids in Ga take Tech seriously. Maybe it's because basketball players are more city kids in many cases but the fact it we're viewed completely different by basketball and football recruits. I know it's easier in bball because you don't need as many kids but it's still true the perception is different. Same for baseball.

I like Chan and I do think he's trying to do things the right way. But you either need to win...at least 8-9 every year with a breakthrough occassionally, and you can't have embarrassing losses if you're going to change perceptions. I think even losing to ugag would be viewed differently if it was 31-28 or 41-38 or something like that.

Right now we're not winning enough to win in boring fashion. If we were 9-2 and didn't score much we'd be Ohio State. But 7-4 and no offense and bad losses just isn't going to cut it. 7-4 with close losses to good teams and blowouts against bad teams would be totally different from recruits perspectives I think.

Not to say we're going to outrecruit ugag in the short term, but we would be much closer with more excitement.

Re: Ken Whisenhunt\'s

I am assuming you brought Ken up instead of other OC's who performed well this weekend because he is a Tech man. But why in the hell would he want to come to Tech? He's already making more money than he would as a college OC and only an HC job would be appealing to him. Since he's probably put himself in line for an HC job in the NFL don't look for him to enter the college ranks anytime soon.

Also remember that an OC here would not have a Rothlesberger, Bettis, or Ward to work with either.

Re: Ken Whisenhunt\'s

I agree with you wholeheartedly! What is dissapointing to me is that no one seems to have that sense of urgency needed, and it doesn't really look like it's about to change.

Re: Ken Whisenhunt\'s

Whisenhunt would be a great candidate for HC here at Tech, but my guess is he'll be a head coach in the NFL in two years, if not next year.

Just to clarify, we ARE talking about the.........

...same Steeler offense that had both (1) more rushing attempts and (2) fewer pass attempts than every other team in the NFL this season, right?

Of course, if he'd bring his offensive line with him, welllll......... ;-)

Look at yesterday's AFCCG stats,
Steelers had 268yds passing and 90 yds rushing. The fact is that his offense is getting the job done, ie. putting points on the scoreboard.

Re: Just to clarify, we ARE talking about the.........

One game does not make a program or quarterback, but big Ben threw for 275 yards yesterday with a sickly low number of attempts. Of course, he completed most of his throws.

As we know, it's not how often you throw it, but how many times your guys come down with it.

The Reason the Steelers are Successful is...

that you have a GT alum as an OC, Whisenhunt, coaching the son of a GT alum, Roethlisberger. It's genetic.

Re: Ken Whisenhunt\'s

NFL head coaches make $5 million per year with 5 year contracts. A GT head coach might make $1.5 million per year with a 5 year contract. Wiesenhunt would be a head coach in the NFL before he ever thought about coming to Tech...

Re: Ken Whisenhunt\'s

Whiz deserves better than Al Davis. If he takes it, I hope he's doing it for the money alone.
