Kick returns were bad today but I don't think this affects our scoring efficiency in any significant way. Basically, I think we hit the red zone and/or score at the same rate regardless of starting position anywhere up to our own 40.I'm also lazy, can any of y'all prove or disprove this?

It's something I may have time for once the offseason rolls around. I don't really have any available time for my personal projects between here and the holidays though, so my stats database is getting old. If somebody doesn't get to it before me, I'll run it for every CPJ year when I do get the time.

Nevermind then. I was hoping you'd have per-drive data in some easy to work with format. Thanks.

If anyone knows where to find that, please let me know. I will look for it when sober.

Most seasons I would, haven't had the chance to update my stats database in a while.

We had been pretty good on kick returns up until this game with Green back there. Not sure what the hell was going on Saturday though. Their kicker must have been getting some serious hang time because I don't think a single one made it to the endzone and somehow we were struggling to get it past the 15.

Unless you see something on tape or do not have enough time on the clock to execute a drive, every kickoff that goes into the endzone should be a touchback and start on the 25 yard line.

No idea why we were taking the ball out of the endzone on Saturday. The offense was rolling.

Exactly. If the offense is rolling, and we have a returner that can take it to the house, why no go for it?

My gold tinted memory says we generally breeze into the opponent's side of the field. 12th most efficient offense in the country going into the game. Seems like the usual effect of starting further back is a more tired defense once we inevitably get within striking distance of the endzone.

My recollection is that a lot of their kicks were hitting right about the goal line, plus or minus a foot, where it's kind of a gray area about whether to take it out or risk an Orwin Smith kickoff safety-type move.

The real question is.....do we have such an efficient offense that we should be running the ball out every time like on Saturday, or should we just take it on the 25? Or did we just think Duke's STs were such shit we should run it every time and we'd probably eventually break one to the house?

I agree, but people are going to question you in hindsight when your KR tears up his leg, coughs up the ball, and gives the opponent 7 free points.
