With a new coach coming in, how many of you think Tyler Evans will not be the punt returner in 2008? I certainly think he won't. Nothing against the guy, he was a tough runner, but he lacked the explosiveness and breakaway speed.

My prediction of who'll get thev KO return and punt return jobs for 2008:

Kickoff returns- Roddy Jones and Jamaal Evans (maybe Embry Peeples)

Punt Returns- Correy Earls

I am 99% sure Evans is done at PR. Earls, Roddy, Greg Smith, and Peeples will handle those duties. we will see the return of returns to GT.

Chan fooled us into thinking a return threat was dangerous for national security. another reason I'm glad he is out.

PJ had their running back senior reggie campbell returning kicks and punts, so we can expect PJ using an experienced receiver or running back at Tech.

Whether or not we use RB's at the special teams roles will largely be dependent on our depth at the position. PJ's offense will play 5 RB's...sometime 6 every game...plus have a couple redshirting. Right now we do not have that kind of depth.

I am also not sure if Jamaal Evans is staying at GT. He had long been scheduled to return home for family reasons and go to a school in Texas. I have not heard anything concrete in some time now so I am hoping that has changed.

Jamaal Evans doesn't have what it takes. Earls does. Haven't seen Peeples and RJones may be needed in the backfield more than on ST.

Well, he did play a big role in winning the UNC game for us with that huge return.

And last year against UGAg on the opening kickoff taking it inside UGAg territory, and then again later in the game.

Aside from that, he doesn't have what it takes..

For God's sake no more f*cking rumors.

are you guys kidding me? why would they not give Tyler Evans a chance? he only had the second most return yards in the acc this year and two votes away from being on second team all acc. this was discussed in another thread a while back. the only reason you didnt see tyler evans take it to the house was becuase of the style of return that was called. chan always liked to get the block and never would set up for the return. so its kinda hard to return with nine guys breathing down your neck. i happen to know tyler and is a good friend and i seriously doubt we will see a different person back there. this is just what ive heard from him in the past.

I think CPJ should let TB be the return man, since that would be the only time he would be on the field. haha just a joke.

Yeah, yeah, the fastest white guy north of Barrett Parkway. Evans actually had more punt returns than anyone in the conference, but ended up fourth in total yards and seventh in average. His longest return was 25 yards. Of the six players ahead of him in average, every one of them except one had returns of 55+ yards. (The other guy sprung one for 44 yards.)

And while they didn't have the number of chances that Evans had, the other two guys that returned punts for Tech this year, Smith and Donley, both had return averages significantly higher than Evans. As a matter of fact, the team average for returns was 9.9 yards, but Evans average for the season was only 9.3.

Since you're a buddy of his, maybe you could suggest that he start returning those suckers north-south, instead of trying to get around the corner against people twice his size and faster than him. It worked for Kelly.

Tyler should get his shot just like everyone else. But if we want to have a good punt return team, we actually have to try to return a punt. We never have put another man back to block for the return man have we? If you leave a guy back there alone, and expect him to make the first 2 guys miss before he has a chance to go anywhere it really doesn't matter who's back there.

wow- he's quitting because he got beat out.Now he has a coach with an Off that couldn't be better for him and he STILL wants to go? he is NOT a first unit I formation or spread back at high level college but the 3O could save him.

Let the Special Teams Coach earn his bread and butter on this one but I'm a long time supporter of the TECH tradition of having a Safety back to field punts.

Special Teams Coach? Make it so.

How in the world did you get that out of what i said?

I said there were family/personal matters to tend to in Texas. Hopefully things have changed...particularly when weighed with all of the other changes.
