Kiss of death?

“Same (offensive) line from last year,” Simmons said. “They’re not the best line we’ve played all year. They’re probably just the same as Pitt and North Carolina. They’re OK.”
Not that it's some difference-making bulletin board material, but why say stuff like this to anyone but your teammates?

Dumb thing to say, but it's not as if Miami has had this in mind during practice all week since it's just come out today.

Can't remember which coach said it first, and it has been said many times, but bulletin board material is only good until the first time you get punched in the mouth. Then you gotta play ball

Been a hot minute since we punched anyone in the mouth in south Florida though. I agree with you, I just wonder how this still happens when there's absolutely no good that could possibly come from it.

And no bad can come of it either. Miami still has to come out and play ball. Simmons' statement is meaningless to the game

I'm not saying that it will impact this game, but I think the idea that pre-game "jabs" can't impact the game itself is coachspeak. It's happened before.

The emotional lift from bulletin board material, as coach said (- I recall Curry saying that on his call-in show back in the 1980s but bet other coaches have also said it), lasts about one snap.

But the lift in terms of motivated preparation can extend deep into the game.

I'm not worried about how this motivates Miami. But it does seem like Simmons has some further maturing to do. Hey, we were all 22 once. Some of us still are.

Pre-game fodder like this doesnt really fire up the other team anymore than they would've been already. However, what it does is make you a target for taunting and baiting. I expect UM to really try to bait him into some retaliatory personal fouls and get into his head. This is the main reason you dont make dumb statements.

UM: "Meh, I didnt want to really win before, but since that one guy on the other team said they would do good, now I REALLY want to win"

It was pathetic watching 'coach Smart, coach S-Mart' this morning going ON and ON and ON about how GREAT Mizzou is with their rushing attack and what a challenge it would be to have them at home today. STFU you're +30, pussy

Let the young man be confident. Now just go play like it.

Richt, like Dabo and some others, is one of those coaches that seems to like talking to the media. Unlike CPJ... he'd never ramble on like that, unprompted.

What the heck can Paul say when he is 2 - 8 against someone?
