Let's assume GT and WF in the ACC CG

Now - who gets coach of the year in the ACC? Chan or Grobe?

Grobe has all the issues of WF plus his QB and top RB are hurt. But he has a R SR and JR laden 2 deep team with most kids in the system for a full 4 or 5 years.

Chan has all of the issues of GT (close to WF) but fewer significant injuries. Ball has been hurt but not out of games. But he has had to do this pretty much without a regular SR class (only 10 srs on this team) and while the school is on probation (reduced scholarships).

If I read the media correctly Grobe will probably get it as a nod to the issues associated with WF football. But I am not sure GT's performance with the player reductions is not more deserving.

Or do you think someone else gets it?

The winner might get the nod as that would be the final success. That's about all of the input I can give on the matter.

Both would be deserving but I'd have to go with Grobe. Removing fan expectations from the equation, he has a tougher job at Wake than Chan does at GT.

Grobe Gets My Vote

Even if they don't win another game this year.

But if I were to hire fresh today, and could choose any existing ACC coach, I'd still go with Chan at GT.

I would give the nod to Grobe for two reasons.
1) Grobe probably gets about 1/10th of the support for his football team than Chan does. Even a divided Tech fanbase is bigger, louder, and more involved than a fully united WF football fanbase. Grobe would kill to have the crowd noise that GT produced for the Troy game.

2) Chan is probably working with 3 guys who will play on Sundays (C and M Johnson, + one more random guy). Grobe has 0.

I disagree with 2. Gattis (S) and Abbate (LB) will have a good shot to play on Sundays - also, a couple of their OLs are contending for ALL-ACC which puts them in the category as well.

Chan would be a shoe-in if it wasn't for the fact that Grobe's performance this year, going to 7-1 (or more) with the "all reverses" offense, is just jawdropping.

Grobe gets the nod. Chan has done an amazing job this year and I'm happy as hell to have him coaching our kids this year, but Grobe has had a lot of adversity this year, and the last time Wake had a season like this was 60 years ago, so that adds a lot to the accomplishment.

I disagree with 2.

What? Disagree with me? Now I will be forced to crush you in the prediction contest!

Unless of course you can get me a discounted flight to Jacksonville.

I disagree AGAIN! I'm running away with the prediction contest this year. I'm not going to allow the admins to decide it by removing a game of their choosing. ;)

The real problem with playing Wake is that we will be the black hat in that game. It's pretty safe to assume the non-partisan viewers will be firmly in Wake's corner.

I would give the nod to Grobe, but that doesn't mean Chan isn't deserving of commendation. Among the things Chan should be recognized for is that part (though clearly not all) of avoiding injuries is attributable to the coaching staff for managing substitutions, practices, and training correctly.

I'd also say that Irish fellow up at BC should get a favorable mention behind Chan.

This year demonstrates the depth of coaching in the ACC despite some obvious weak links. Papa Bowden and Beamer have been phenomenal coaches throughout their careers. I still believe Big Ralph is a solid coach and I don't think we can right off Al Groh yet.

Clearly, Grobe, Gailey, T. Bowden & O'Brien have proven themselves as competent and above average coaches, though none have made a push yet into the great coaches category.

How about if we win the next 5 and Chan takes National COY honors? At 12 and 2, and entrenched in top 10, who would argue?

Louisville will get blown out in a big bowl game.

I think Grobe & Schiano are fighting that one out.

Wait a second Contact! We are running away with it this year.

BTW, I would be careful about your last comment, you do not want to piss off gtfan because he might just take away 3 points from you.;)

Inconceivable

You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well-known is this: never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!

Would have to consider that WF lost their QB in the first game (I believe) and their starting RB a few games after that.

Gailey has a team with the 7th toughest past schedule in the Nation, and he will LIKELY go 7-1 in the conference.
Grobe has a team with the 114th toughest past schedule in the Nation, and he will possibly go 4-4 in the conference.

You might want to reserve your votes a few weeks.
