From Disappointment To Dismay
Call me a late-bloomer, but yesterday’s performance was an eye-opener for me. I have been patient trying to see some improvement in our team. But I will admit that the season overall has been a disappointment to me. IMO, our three best games were Vandy, UVa, and NC State. Our three worst were UGa, Fresno State, and Wake. It wasn’t hard to see that apparently different teams showed up for those games. Apparently, the UVa and NC State games were an aberration and the others a more realistic look at our team and coaches.
Yesterday’s performance was abysmal. I am especially concerned that it came on the heels of the 51-7 shellacking at the hands of the puppies. That performance SHOULD have called for a sense of urgency. Since nothing else seems that it was, that game SHOULD have been a wake up call for this coaching staff. That should have been a signal that I (the coaches) had better make damn sure my team is PREPARED and MOTIVATED to win the bowl game. A bowl game we apparently begged and crawled to get an invite to. A bowl game against an outmanned opponent from a 2nd rate conference. A bowl game whose 15 extra practices were supposed to launch us into 2003 with a new outlook and better preparation.
I have been patient. This despite the fact that I have literally found watching our team PAINFUL this season. Dull and boring would be an understatement. Emotionless at all levels doesn’t do justice to the “going through the motions” attitude I am detecting. No, ahsoisee, I don’t buy your conspiracy theory yet, but young people will show some spit and fire if they are shown any to follow. If we are trying to put together a product to sell tickets in our newly expanded stadium, we had better start scheduling Tennessee, South Carolina, Alabama, and other teams with large traveling contingents, because it doesn’t look like the home boys are going to be filling those extra seats.
I have been willing to endure the growing pains that occur in a coaching changeover. I have been willing to show faith in Dave Braine and the selection committee, knowing that coaching decisions are major and long-term. I would have been called a FOC’er by most on this board. Simply because I believe that patience is called for with a new coach. Please remove my name from that list because I have moved into “I simply don’t care” realm. It’s not worth it to pour that much emotional energy into something that simply doesn’t appear to be working to improve itself. God Bless you parents who send your boys to play football for Georgia Tech. It is a wonderful institution and you will be amazed at the impact it will have on your child’s life. But, I have watched Tech football since 1963. From the wide eyed idolatry of a 7 year old, through the antics of Pepper, the 1-win seasons and 10-win seasons, with a national title for a bonus one year. Honestly, I was more interested, and impressed, when Bill Curry was struggling through consecutive one-win seasons than I am now. Pass this off as the tired ramblings of a 40 year fan, but I never bought into fandom or the excitement of following my favorite college team as a necessarily painful experience. Will I go to the games? Yes. Will I cheer the Jackets? Yes. But it will be a much different level than in the past.
