I know everbody likes the way we are lining up, but how does anyone think we match up on the line? I like our DL on their OL. I am so grateful to have
Richards back. He will be a gamebreaker this year. ND may be overrated, but what are there strengths?
The closer the game gets, the more questions go through my head. Am I overconfident? Is Quinn really THAT good? If he is then we could be in for a long day. What is our game plan from kickoff? I am just a little clouded on what GT's main focus on D and O.

76 thanks for your interest in the game...I am sure the coaches/players have quized themselves on match ups/tendencies/game plan from the very beginning....I do hope that you continue to look for insight but don't lose sleep over this one....Cheer like H____LL and trust the coaches/players to get it done on the field.....Let's all show our support & our faith in the coaches/players.....by taking a bold stand to let everyone know that GT FOOTBALL is on the VERGE of HAVING A IMPACT SEASON!!!! Go JACKETS!

(76 hope you can find some insights on your questions)

The BIGGEST WEAKNESS ND players will face & come to terms w/ at the end of the game is that THEY WILL ALL WISH THEY WERE WEARING A GT UNIFORM @ THE END OF THE NIGHT......especially QUINN when he is unable to sleep the night before/after the game....The night before b/c he's fearful & the NIGHT AFTER b/c the GT DEFENSE was even better than his worst NIGHTMARE!!!!
I hope we find our way to him early & often.....and MAY #21 steal the HIGHLIGHT REELS!!!!!!!!!

I'll take a business approach to this game and provide my S.W.O.T. analysis (Strength's, Weaknesses, Opportunties, Threats) of Notre Dame.

Notre Dame:

Strengths:
1.) Passing Game
2.) Experience on Offense
3.) Defensive Line
4.) Big Play ability
5.) Name Recognition/ Intimidation.

#1 and #2 are self explanatory. Their defensive line is big, don't know about fast, but they are big and can push people off the ball. Weiss also has the ability to score or make a big play when they need it most. They have an explozive offense. Lastly, they are Notre Dame and sometimes opponents get lulled into "Holy Shit were playing Notre Dame"!!! Instead of focusing on the game itself.

Weaknesses:
1.) Linebackers
2.) Special Teams (especially kicking game)
3.) Secondary

Weiss was concerned enough about his linebackers he took one of his best RB's behind Darius Walker and made him a Linebacker. His special teams cost him last year and almost cost him a couple of wins. Their secondary consistently got torched last year and even with a year of experience, I wouldn't trade them for ours with 3 new starters (actually 2 and one position change).

Opportunities and Threats I will evaluate from an opponents basis. As in their opportunities against us and their threats of GT being their opponent as opposed to someone else.

Opportunities:
1.) Short Passes and screens to neutralize blitz.
2.) score fast and get us out of "ball control" football.
3.) Contain Reggie Ball making him beat you with his arm.
4.) Hurrying Ball and disguising coverages to force Ball into poor decisions.

Threats:
1.) Protecting Brady Quinn from the blitz.
2.) Containing Calvin Johnson
3.) Shutting down GT's running game.
4.) OLine holding up against our Defense for 4 quarters.

This is the basics as I see it.

If you took GT and did the same analysis you'd have:

Strengths:
1.) Defensive Scheme
2.) Most dangerous WR in college football
3.) One of the best defensive lines and linebacking corp in the country.
4.) running game

Weaknesses
1.)Inconsistent QB play
2.) Secondary is unproven.
3.) Little depth in defensive backfield.
4.) Special Teams

Opportunities vs. Notre Dame.
1.) Run the Ball effectively.
2.) Get the ball to Calvin Johnson
3.) Pressure the QB.
4.) Neutralize Darius Walker

Threats vs. Notre Dame
1.) Covering their receivers.
2.) Mistakes from the QB.
3.) Play come from behind football.
4.) Special Teams play.

We match up very well with ND in all facets of this game minus one which is unproven. That is we will be breaking in two starters in the secondary and have little depth there. Sounds like the practice reports indicate we should be ok at the CB spots and Lewis has tons of experience as a SS. The FS spot concerns me a lot.

Outside of that, it will come down to Reggie Ball. He cannot make mistakes against ND, and he has to do more than "not lose" the game. This is a tall order. If he can show up and move the ball against ND's defense, and our secondary covers long enough for our Dline to penetrate, then we will beat ND and we may beat them bad.

However, if ND can use the short pass and screens successfully AND fluster Reggie, then we will lose this game badly.

That said, lets look at the intangibles. Our special teams should be in the very least IMPROVED from last year. We have more BIG Game experience than they do and if a ND fan tries to deny that, he's an idiot. We like playing as underdogs. ND has been listening to the announcement of their "second coming" since their bowl game.

I believe we win this game Only because in my opinion, had we played ND's schedule last year, we would have at LEAST gone 9-3. If they played our schedule they more than likely would have had the same if not worse record. That's just the truth in my opinion. The teams they beat last year worth mentioning are Tennessee which had their worst year in I don't know how long. They beat Michigan, who had the same. They beat Navy.

Their most impressive game was a loss to USC. they got clobbered by Ohio St. And they lost to Mich St.
In reality this team is WELL Coached because they beat the people they are supposed to beat. But in reality, their opponents last year stunk.

BOR,
thank you for your analysis. Always good insight and, how do you say, the bourbon shot to my concerns. I am also very eager to see how or DL holds up. I would hope to see Richards really bust thru the line. Most of my time watching him were in the victory over Cuse, but I had not seen a tackle bust thru the line like that in years. Hopefully Brady Quinn will know what DR's helmet tastes like when all is said and done.
I had an opportunity to go this Saturday for 75.00, but decided on recruiting GT fans over to the house. I will be smellin' blood when the time is here. Where is my beer avatar?

Bottom line

Assuming that this doesn't turn into GOOFY game with wierd fumbles on STs and such---
the bottom line-if we don't control the ball and clock a great deal with our Offense we have little chance.ND hasn't been stopped and we won't either. We can slow them some though.
So it comes down to RBs ability to make it happen.Getting POINTS not first downs,TDs not FGs.Not a great basis for a win based on previous exp.

Thank you for your insight BOR. You are pretty much right on everything in my opinion.

Re: Bottom line

Thank you. My false expectations have now been shattered by stats.:laugher:

I see your point, but I think that even with RB, our offense will be the best in years. I agree with ND's ability to score. I think RB will come out on fire. Not a RB fan, but I have seen enough 4 year QB's have their best seasons as SR's. If we run the ball successfully, I don't see ND getting too many ops to run up the score. We run, we win.

I forgot to mention I was watching a preseason football show and I learned that ND is replacing their entire o-line from last year, good news for our formidable d-line.:D

I think most of their offensive line has a fair amount of experience except for RT where they are breaking in a true Frosh who beat out a guy that did have experience. Supposed to be a top player but still a first game tackle.

IMO the LBs are the weakness we have to exploit. We have to make neutralize a good DL and make their LBs make the plays. This probably means a lot of TC and RB trying to get around the edge and traps/misdirections to make the LB read the play correctly. See if they have enough speed and reaction to be where they need to be.

If we can make them worry about the run then their backfield is vulnerable. Make the safeties spend that extra second worrying about whether to come up and support the run or stay back and help on Calvinthat
On D, IMO we have to mix up our blitz and no blitz calls against Quinn. If we blitz every play he will kill us. He will read it, 3 step drop and get rid of the ball. I hope that this year we can get pressure with the Dline and not have to blitz every down, but regardless we will have to mix it up. Whch means the chess match between Tenuta and Weiss should be fascinating.

If we can stop the run, make Quinn rely on the pass only, and get pressure without selling out every play on D we have a good chance of slowing them down but not stopping them entirely.

As BOR said, and I agree, if we can't run the ball effectively and they are effective with the short crisp passing attack we could be in for a long night. On the other side, if we can run against their LBs, throw off the run and mix up our D then we should be in good shape.

That is not the case. They are losing one starter. That was bad information that somehow made it onto the web.

I think the key is to keep there offense off the field and keep pressing there defense. There Defense is there weakness and if we can keep putting together long drives it could be a long night for Notre Dame. GT 28 ND 7
