won't play in their bowl games to prepare for NFL combine (and avoid injury)

Good for them. There's no championships on the line so why play in the Love's Truckstop Bowl just for fun

Do they still get the bowl perks?

Interesting precedent moving forward

This. Quality of the games are no doubt affected, as is fan interest. Wild guess that these moves will make some fans stay at home that otherwise would have gotten to see CM or LF play.

That said, let the players do what they want. Even worse with this would be having some sort of NCAA mandate related to playing. Only people who should step in are coaches, and I'm not sure that would make even make sense on a practical level.

Great addition yourself

Posted about 1 minute too early.

Jesus you're dumb.

What kind of "NCAA mandate" could force two players to play? What kind of punishment could coaches or the NCAA give to two players who never need to step foot on campus again?

TBH I thought Chubb's performance this season had more to do with an NFL contract, much like Clowney, than it did with injury. Still not sure on that one. One has to wonder, "if it starts with bowl games where does it stop?" If they skip a year or try to redshirt surely their coaches are just going to let them go, but they have an interest (understandably so) to protect their bodies until pay day. I don't see it going that far, but I am curious where things end up.

Right up until it starts hurting their draft stock. NFL teams might care if a player sat out an entire year, but none of them will care about skipping the final games where nothing is at stake.

Well we've already seen people "skipping" a year with leaving early for the draft. That's essentially the same thing. Plus they just wouldn't be on scholarship if they skipped a year, so that wouldn't make any sense. I'd think the tipping point would be when their team is eliminated from whatever goal is in mind (bowl game / division title). With so many rivalry games to finish the season I doubt you'd see too many kids start to skip regular season games.

Honestly I don't really fault them. It's a shitty thing to do to you team and fanbase, but honestly I as a fan care less about middle tier bowl games than I do about regular season games. They're fairly meaningless outside of the NY6/playoff games. And you can likely increase your draft stock quite a bit by training specifically for the combine for 4 extra weeks rather than game planning for your bowl game opponent. I'd be annoyed if a GT player did this, but again, can't really fault them.
