Lucas Cox is our leading rusher in terms of Yards Per Carry, with 8 attempts for 88 yards. I have to admit that at the start of the season I was not enamored with Lucas Cox being a starting A-back. But he can flat out block playside. And he has enough speed to get open on passing routes and it takes more than one guy to bring him down.

I wonder if he gets so many yards when he does touch it because the defense doesn't expect it...or because they really can't bring him down easily.

Edit: He did have a 36 yard run at VT. If you take that attempt away, he still has a respectable 7.4 yards per carry.

He gets those yards because Coach Johnson calls the plays and is thinking of plays in bunches of six or eight. Plays are called with a thought-out strategy in mind. Plays are watched and analyzed not only on how successful the play results were, but also on how the defense reacted to that play or that set--good or bad. Then, when the time is right, an appropriate call for that situation and that defensive tendancy is called. This is something we haven't seen in the last six and maybe in the last 30 years. Offense has often been the step child at the Flats because it is a time honored truth that football is basically kicking and defense. That paradigm doesn't affect Paul Johnson. He is all about offense, and making the opposition dance to his tune. It is just an overwhelming bonus for him that he owns a top notch defense this year, too. We may be seeing the development of something Biblical. Larry Coker commenting on Bebe's 80+ yard reception was the scheme runs, runs, runs, runs, runs ---then pop, pass for TD. Cox will always be there to exploit the defense when they adjust to contain the wide plays.

Yep. CPJ runs plays designed to create situations where the defense is one man short in the direction of the play.

Then, he waits...

Sooner or later, because, as CPJ said - he'll run the play until you stop it - something has to give. What gives is eventually the defense goes unbalanced to bring more resources against the play.

Then, CPJ grins. And calls the exact play to hit the defense in the area they just raided to cover the play they thought he was going to call again.

Oops. Eight-three yard touchdown.

I remember Nix trying to throw deep from our 17 yard line. At least I can laugh about it now.;)

The more the season goes on the more I am impressed by Mr. Cox. (He has earned the respect.) He can block, catch, catch and run and flat out run. He may have been brought up in the Cox Family Fullback Mode the he can do it all and do it very, very well.

I am looking forward to watching him play every week.

Thank you Lucas Cox.

Are there any more Cox brothers in the wings? Maybe their high school? We need more of these guys!
