One thing that nobody can argue about PJ is the influx of GSU fans now supporting GT (where before many hated GT)
I feel like i've shown on the forum that i'm not a jerk or anything so perhaps you guys will keep me around but I have a confession. I'm a poser GT fan :ugh:

I've been following GSU since 2001 like its a drug, while I HATE UGA, i've never had much of an opinion of GT one way or another but now i'm a HUGE fan and GT is my second fav team (don't hate me)

I've been posting on here as if i'm not a GSU fan but its a lie and I just wanted to be honest, and since i'm being honest I have a question.

Where did the term come from "the flats"? Is that what everyone calls the stadium or something cause I cant figure it out, i'm very familiar with passing into "the flats" but not a place called the flats. Sorry for being an imposter but I have good intentions and hope to bring some personal insight about PJ to the forum.
So I guess this is my late "intro post" for everyone but I think what I am trying to say is, bee nice to this GSU loving newbie :D

the flats is an old name for where the practice fields are. In that area back in the day, a creek used to run, essentially through where the stadium is now down on a N/S direction through where the practice fields are right now. The land was at the bottom of a hill (bobby dodd way) and was nicknamed the flats of atlanta. The name stuck. This what I vaguely remember.....and I think its essentially right.

Yellow Fever,
Welcome to the neighborhood! Absolutely no problem w/ you sticking w/ your alma mater as your first choice for favorite team;as you spend more time with us and learn more of our history you will understand why we are so passionate about GT.

About the term 'flats'. If I remember correctly it has to do with the original stands built by the students on what was the only level(flat) portion of the then existing campus. Rose Bowl Field was the name given to land purchased with the winnings from the 1929 Rose Bowl game; said land was used for a football practice field as well as for other sports.

Also, the GT campus is somewhat hilly, therefore making the 'flats' seem even 'flatter'!

THWG!!

I've always rooted for Georgia Southern. Even been to a few games. Saw them stomp the hell out of App State at home. I think that was the year before App start reelin off these championships.

Part of the reason I've always like GSU was the offense. So I'm pretty psyched to see it come here.

The Flats refers to the place where the stadium is today that was bordered by a creek. It was the only area flat enough and big enough on the Tech campus to play an organized football game. I think 33j is mostly right except for the fact that the Flats was where the stadium currently sits, not the practice field.

The influx of GSU fans is very welcome.

Two other groups that have suddenly become GT fans are HS option football coaches and Navy grads.

CPJ's reputation among former players and fans at his previous stops is astounding. Here's an example:

My wife's personal trainer played for Hawaii in the early 90's, when CPJ was there. He played DE so he didn't play directly for Johnson, but he has immense respect for him. Some of his former Hawaii teammaes want to fly into Atlanta to see CPJ's first game coaching a BCS team, and treat that weekend as a team reunion.

Your coolness factor has increased tenfold since becoming a GT fan.

 welcome to the yellow jacket family YF, I always liked GSU as well..

Man, I have been a GT fan since I was born (no choice really).... So that's been 40 years.... I have never asked why it was called 'the flats' or really asked why Rose Bowl field was named that. Just thought the name was in commemoration of playing in it.

So, great question. And, since you had a choice in the matter, congratulations.

One thing I have learned over these last 40 years is: Bobby Dodd has second initial substituted often with a g at Tech.

The second thing I have learned is it builds character and humility to be a Tech fan, and stick it out.

Look forward to seeing you post and cheer on these wonderful Jackets.....

Bring some of that GSU fire to the stands, too!

I always knew my first GT game would be when they first play GSU but now i'm ALOT more anxious to the triple option again now that PJ is here in Georgia. How much chance do you think a non booster could get tickets for the Jstate game and how much should they cost? I think I can make the GSU vs. UGA game and the GT vs. Jstate game all in one weekend!

I have another question, if I see a fellow GT fan on the street and just simply shout out "whats the good word" will he respond "THWG"?

yep! at games it is about 100%
At games it is more like 500% b/c at least 5 other people will say it.

Outside of gameday you'll get it close to 100% (And don't forget to follow up with "How bout them dawgs?")

No more than $20 if you are scalping, usually less. But that was back when we sucked. I would think the prices will rise in the coming years.

tickets for the JSU game will be easy to get, but I believe that will change very soon...Big fan of Hatcher's, I wanted him or CPJ. Actually Hatch was my 1a. and Johnson 1b. Most of that hype came from good ole CR, well deserved though, he is a heck of a coach...I hope you guys can keep him around-

I was raised a GT fan and became a GSU fan when I started school there in 2001. My wife is also a GSU alum so we have season tickets to GSU. Plus the wife's uncle is very good friends with CPJ, so I get some good info every so often. He actually told me two years ago that CPJ would be coaching at GT as soon as Gailey was gone.

I think there are going to be a lot of GSU fans pulling for GT now that CPJ is here. Hopefully those fans will show up to the games.

Welcome aboard!
