Did you see the press conference?
Beamer said that Vick told him about the "driving with a revoked license" citation in mid-December. Beamer asked John Balien (who is kind of like Beamer's administrative assistant) to find out what happened. Balien (at the press conference) said he checked it all out with the authorities and it was a little convoluted (Vick had done everything to get his license back, but a car registered to him had not had insurance paid on it. Vick's friend was caught with the car and because there was an insurance problem it showed Vick had a suspended license.) Balien said it was his understanding that it was really administrative in nature and all Vick had to do was pay the insurance for his car, sign a form for DMV and all was OK. That's what he said he told Beamer. Beamer said that he didn't think it was serious - only an administrative issue so he didn't tell Weaver or Steger.
None of them -- Balien, Beamer, Weaver or Steger knew about the speeding violation until it was posted on the Virginia DMV site yesterday. When they became aware of that was when the decision was made to permanently suspend him.
They said it was not one thing but the accumulation of off field problems and unsportsmanlike play.
Beamer also addressed his team as a whole. He said that going into the ACC Championship game, VT was the second least penalized team in the league. But against FSU and in the fist half of the Gator Bowl, VT played stupid and undisciplined. He said that VT has won a lot of games and they didn't win those games by being stupid and undiscplined. He also said that those six quarters of football were not fun for him and he was going to fix the problem. He said it was a small element of the team that has started to grow and he will fix it. He said some players might have to change their attitude and some might have to leave the program -- but it will be fixed.
I hope he's right.
