Sorry to hear this. My mother in law struggled so much with this awful disease. Treatment options are improving all the time. I wish Coach Richt well. I feel for his family, too. Caring for a loved one in late stages Parkinson’s is difficult. My father in law was amazing, but it was hard on him.

Tough disease. Runs in my family, but onset has normally been closer to 75-80. Richt is still pretty young, comparatively.

Certainly wish him the best. Aside from coaching UGA, I’ve always heard he’s a great guy.

Diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. I know he coached the mutts but I always thought he was a class act and quality individual. Praying for him.

Mark Richt was one of those guys that you knew you only hated because he was associated with your rival. A great guy who I felt was always fair to us once he left U[sic]GA.

Of course, even if he wasn't this would still suck to see. Hard to imagine what it's like to get such a diagnosis, and even harder to imagine taking it with as positive an attitude as he is.

Good luck to him going forward.

Rough run for Richt, first the heart attack last year and now this. Is it better, worse, or doesn't make a difference on a later in life diagnosis like this? Wondering if it tends to progress at highly variable speeds or not and what the impact of age is.

My mother-in-law has it and my grandmother had it. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, including a former UGA coach.

Good question. Michael J Fox was diagnosed at 30 and is still around at 60. Ali was diagnosed at 42 and lived to be 74. My suspicion would be that it progresses quicker with a later onset, but I dunno.

Not sure, but I believe Ali actually had Parkinson's Syndrome which is the same constellation of symptoms but can be brought on by a variety of conditions, probably repeated blows to the head in his case. It can also be triggered by certain drugs or associated with various neurological diseases. These conditions are sometimes referred to Parkinsonisms or Atypical Parkinson's, but are a variety of disorders distinct from true Parkinson's Disease.

Class act of a guy. He is a better coach than Kirby Smart is too. He could at least tell which QB was better and should be starting.

My father died from complications of Parkinson's. He also got it in his early sixties and lived fine for about 12 years, including extensive travel. After that, the last 3-4 years was hell on earth for my mom.

No two cases are alike. Parkinson's is not a single thing, there are dozens of variations ranging from annoying to devastating. It is a brain disease that affects the body.

Treatments are getting better but there is no cure.

My prayers are with him and his family. Enjoy life now- you just never know.

Yeah, he coached my most hated rival and he may have been an ass while there, but I wouldn't wish any disease on anyone no matter how much I appear to hate them because he doesn't deserve it. I wish for him to have continued good health and a long life despite the current diagnosis so that he may not only see his children grow up and get married but also witness several losses of the mutts at the hands of our Jackets.

I don't know I'm as sold on his good guy persona as expressed here, but it doesn't matter. I don't wish Parkinson's disease on anyone. Hope he has the best course possible.
