Re: Maryland is a \'must not lose\' game.

Thurs nite will be GT's 14th on ESPN-Thurs, more times than any other team. It will be the 5th time GT has played Maryland on ESPN-Thurs with Tech & Md splitting the 1st 4. Terrapins won last yr @ GT on Thurs 20-17 OT. Last time the Yellow Jackets played @ Md on Thurs was '96 when the Terps won 13-10, seriously damaging GT's Bowl chances(we finished 5-6).
This is the 15th yr in a row Tech has played Maryland & we're 10-4, going 7-1 @ home & only 4-3 @ Md. GT won @ Md in '00 35-22.

GT Ace, give me your honest opinion, and don't try to be political.

Do you think Tech will beat Maryland at Maryland, yes or no? I know you have a gut feeling one way or the other.

You asked for GTAce's opinion, but Ima give you mine, too. I think we will. I think a 5-2 record is just enough adversity (as faced in 2000) for us to do a 180 and get back on track. A win against Maryland will put our chances of beating NC State up by about 75%.

Re: Maryland is a \'must not lose\' game.

Thats a shame then cause we're only 4-2. Alas,1 W away from turning it around...

Maryland is a \'must not lose\' game.

It's hard to say Mary is a 'must win' game as it won't do much for us. We'd have a 5-2 record against decent competition & be 2-2 in ACC play with losses to decent WF & Clem. All interested parties would still be in a wait & see mode as to how we'll do vs Virginia @ home.
BUT, oh what a mess a loss would create! GT would fall to 4-3 agin decent, average teams. Huge difference in perception between 4-3 & 5-2. At 5-2 Tech appears to be a winning program, while at 4-3 the Rambling Wrecks seem to be struggling just to be 50-50. Worse still, the 1-3 conference mark will make Tech a 'weak sister' in the ACC. Can U imagine what the perception of our program will be at 1-3? It makes my skin crawl!
A loss would turn up the heat a great deal on Gailey/O'Brien. Questions would be coming from everywhere. Doubts would creep in as to the rest of the season from players, coaches, fans, students, media & our opponents. GT would be perceived as way behind in the ACC & not even in the same breath as our in-state other team. Our whole season could tank with an L.
This is a 'must not lose' game that our Coaches & Players had better be prepared for. An off week should give the coaches a good chance to get the game plan right. We'll see how the team respnds to a tough loss & it will define '02.
Be prepared Yellow Jackets & beat Maryland!

Re: Maryland is a \'must not lose\' game.

I don't think it's as bad as it seems around here. No one expected an undefeated season here, we all predicted losses. I thought we'd have 2 or 3, but that was based on the assumption that Suggs would excel at QB.

Most of the preseason predictions I remember had Tech at 7-5 or so. So are the problems we're experiencing unexpected? I don't think so.

Maryland is NOT a must win game. It would be a good win, but if we lose, it's not that hard to accept. Both our coaches and our QB are on a learning curve that will take time to sort through.

I think MD is a must win game... and really feel that our season could hinge on this game... and, (affixing Gold Glasses firmly in place) I do think we will win on Thur night.... I am hoping that this game will be our WF game of 2000... the NC game of 1997... etc... the light bulb comes on!!

Re: Maryland is a \'must not lose\' game.

Suggs'll pick up his game Thursday night. Don't worry, the Jackets are going to win. I could go over offense, defense, special teams, matchups, and coaching, but i dont want to waste anyone's time.

I think the whole team will pick up their game and we win by 10.
