I am by no means going against CPJ, I support him 100%

But...

Does it seem to anyone else that we play the first half just trying to get by? It seems like we do no try to score, and just hope the D can get us into the 2nd half without being down.

Also,

Why did we run Dwyer up the middle 75% of the time during the first half? I think they came to the brilliant conclusion that we were going to do that after 10 times.

Also,

Can we just drop field goal kicking from our playbook? I like the fake fieldgoal punt, but that will work maybe one more game since it is a known fact that we can kick a football.

It does seem like we have been starting slow the last few games. It puts us in a position of trying to catch up and gives the other team an emotional boost. I don't know if that's just a coincidence or Tech playing conservative or other teams being more fired up at the beginning. As far as the kicking game goes, we obviously don't have the level of talent we've been accustomed to. This is a big problem, but it's not fair to blame Blair. This guy is punting, kicking off, and doing FG/PAT. PLUS, he's made some game-saving tackles on some run backs as well. There's only so much you can do when you lack key players, so you have to accept it this year and hope we can fill some holes next year.

My point: Can we stop trying to kick FGs?

Yea it does seem like we start slow. Always a 3 and out. Yesterday we looked flat. I agree with the FG. If it is outside of a 35 yard FG then dont even think about it. Either punt or just go for it.

Sure, you can punt from the 30 out (and net 10 yards sometimes), or go for it on 4th and 10 (and turn the ball over most of the time). From a realistic standpoint, though, there are going to be those times when the coach knows the field goal is bad odds, but a chance for 3 beats the alternative. The fake field goal punt is just an attempt to make the best of a bad situation, but you are right: teams will start putting a return man downfield every time we try a 40+ field goal.

I dont think we come out flat, I think we are waaaaaaaaaaaay to conservative in the 1st half.

Also, if we have the ball with 2 minutes left in the first half and at least 2 to's, lets try to score!!!

It has to do with the Offensive Line. If we can hit them in the mouth and get an actual push off the line of scrimmage, that dive will be giving 4 yards all day. Anyone who used to watch Nebraska when they were good will remember how incredible the triple option is when you have a good O-Line. We already have the skill players and a good enough defense. We just need an O-Line.

I somewhat agree...

it seems like we "waste" a couple of series just running a pretty basic package at the start of each game.I get the sense that we are trying to see how they defend the option so we can adjust. IMHO, the games have been shortened too much..each series becomes more precious so let's come out firing. (disclaimer: no, I don't know FB better than CPJ and no, I don't think they are intentionally trying to go 3 and out on the first series or so)

1. I would like to point out that we ran up 14 quick points on uva by marching right down the field.

2. I don't think we're intentionally coming out flat. We're just, as someone else said, throwing some things at the defense to see how they are defending it. If what we're doing doesn't blow them away early, ala uva, it looks like we're just flat. Granted, I thought we were flat ALL DAY yesterday.

3. I got into a heated argument yesterday with ppl in the band when they kept bitching and moaning about the dive. People have to realize that in this option, that dive has the potential to set up everything. We started out the game attacking the edge, and unc was crashing the outside as soon as we tried, also, the DTs were lined up off of the center, so we tried to hit them with the dive play. There were so many times that Nesbitt actually AUDIBLED to the dive, or simply read the dive as the play to make. Keep in mind that when executed, Dwyer could just fall over at the line of scrimmage and get 4-5 yards. Even when a gain looks inconsequential, it turns out to be a decent chunk of yardage. I highly doubt they "figured us out", they really just destroyed our O-line all day long.

yes, you're crazy

No. You don't attempt to go for it on 4th down twice if you're "just trying to get by."

Why did we run Dwyer up the middle 75% of the time during the first half?

Because UNC defended us like UVA did - they pushed their linebackers to the outside and gave us 3 on 3 on the interior. Those inside runs go for 10 a pop if we block properly.

Can we just drop field goal kicking from our playbook?

No.

1. Going for it by running a draw up the middle on 4th and long?

how quickly we forget.

many of you are saying we ALWAYS start slow.

Against FSU we scored 4 TD's and a FG in our first 6 possesssions. We were on our way to another one when Nesbitt went down.

Definitely did not start slow against FSU...just made the correct reads and blocked effectively against a brainless defense.

injuries are killing our performance. When you have 3rd string people in against 1st team you will look pathetic.

Until we get a healthy line (which may not happen this year) you will only see glimpses of positive plays. Our D has been strong enough to cover for some of our problems but turnovers will kill ANY team.

If we lose the turnover battle we probably lose the game.

When you look at the stats it is clear we made some plays however the 1st drive by NC and then the turnovers were too much to overcome.

This thread is idiotic. Forget FSU's start already? We seriously have either on of the dumbest fanbases in America or one of the most deranged. We are running out of OL guys. Our QB is gimpy and we still don't really know what we're doing with this offense. Every time we have to go deeper on the depth chart it probably limits us that much more in terms of running the O smoothly. We have lots of thing we're trying to overcome, but PJ NOT TRYING TO SCORE ON EVERY POSSESSION isn't one of them.

On the bright side, we're undefeated this year when giving up fewer than 3 turnovers.

:)

We had 2 problems running the dive in the first half.

1) Guards and center missed blocks.

2) Nesbitt missed read.

Its that simple. If we execute we win.

We are young and in the 9th game of a completely new system. Its part of the package when you are in the first year of a new coach. Ask Alabama fans if its worth having a mediocre first year to have future success.

We are going to a bowl game and still have a shot a 10 wins (something we have done only 1 time since 1990). Miami is young and has Randy Shannon coaching them. We are due for good luck against the over-rated mutts. Things are moving in the right direction, its a great time to be a Jacket fan. I wish everyone would stop bitching, get behind the team for the next 2 games and help pull these kids to victory!
