I'm not blaming him, because he certainly didn't come here to be a Punt Returner, but he has not been very good at all this year(understatement). I like the kid, but is there no one else? Even our PRs last year(who I am pretty sure are still on the team) could get 7-10 yards on every punt return, eventhough they lacked TD potential.

I can't remember the last time we had a playmaker at punt returner. I hate when teams overlook the importance of special teams

I think Melton does a decent job. The problem is he never has any blocking. Our ST's really need some work.

You have to have time to take at least a few steps. Our blocking on PRs has been terrible.

Yeah, I agree the blocking has been bad. Even when he has space though he doesn't go North and South very quickly. I noticed on one punt in particular today, it's like he pauses to decide which way he needs to go so he can go all the way. That cuts a 15 yard return to a < 5 yard return lots of times.

I wish our punt returners had more of a Kelly Rhino mentality. He refused to call for a fair catch, and his returns were always exciting.

I concur with all the criticisms below. I will add that he goes down with minimal contact too. Go catch the ball and run full speed up field young man. You aren't Reggie Bush.

morgan b could probably do some exciting things back there...however, i don't want to see my every play starters returning punts....

We worked on this crap all week and STILL had more yards in penalties than actual return yards.

The special teams coach's (Monken?) seat should be getting pretty damn warm. Sick of this crap...especially after we were decent at this and KOR when Coach Kelly was supervising.

I agree about running north and south, but it's pretty tough to make something out of nothing when guys are on you as soon as you catch the ball.

Melton has great concentration and great hands, never dropped one even with the bad blocking he has been dealt with. I like him in this role. One muff is worth a hell of a lot of return yards. There was much improvement this week on punt returns. Give him a chance.

He did drop one this week. He picked it back up and got hammered. I think he dropped one earlier in the year as well.

A drop if is not a muff, if it is dived on. Then it is called a "muff dive", which is really good!

Didn't he lose one in the first half of the BC game, or was that someone else returning punts?

I don't think he ever lost one, but I may be wrong.

Guys

Paul Johnson just addressed this last week in his weekly conference.

He said that Melton was not the problem...it was the punt return team doing their assignments. He said the same thing regarding kickoff returns.
