Miami goes with Shannon...

Strange search.........

Fire your head coach, interview two coaches (Leach and Schiano), and then hire your underqualified defensive coordinator as head coach. The U of the 80's ain't never coming back!!

I don't know much about Shannon, but it sounds like you might be right. They just don't have the "pseudo-discipline" or the recruiting power that they used to.

Let's just hope our strong recruiting class pans out.

This guy is a year younger than I am. Man, there's just something not right about that. I am not supposed to be older than the HC at the University of Miami. :(

Cost cutting move. Much cheaper that way. ;)

I think it is a good hire. He has been considered one of the top DC's in the country for a few years now. His name has been rumored for other jobs, and many people have stated that he should be the next minority hired. The players backed this coach and want to play for him. Even though Miami isn't what it use to be, you can not say that there defense has looked bad.

On a side note, these job openings have shown that football is much different today than 20 years ago. TV markets has made the playing field much more level. In the past a certain few schools would get the best players because they were seen and known the best (Miami, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Ohio State, Michigan, etc.) These teams still have name recognition, but it is much easier to take a Rutgers, WVU, or even a Wake Forest to a high level bowl game than in the past. Most schools are shown on tv numerous times, weight lifting has significantly changed athletes, and last technology is a large factor. Technology gains in weight lifting and coaching strategies has helped athletes greatly. Now you can buy tapes of techniques and even little league coaches can learn how to teach at least some basic skills. With the money coaches are getting today and a more level playing field, why would you want to leave and go to a school with such large pressures and short leashes?

People down here are split on this decision, Randy Shannon is the main recruiter for "da U" in south Fl, he has longstanding relationships with some of the great high shcool programs in south Fl (Northwestern, Central, Carol City ect ect) so Miami did not want to lose him specialy knowing how much he wanted to be a head coach somewhere and the fact that he didn't get the Ole Miss job only increased his frustrations. I believe Miami had no choice but to hire him otherwise he would be gone (he's said to have contacts with Texas about the DC vacancy as well as others schools) and then a demoralized Miami team would have to recruit against him next year. He's the type of guy that the inner city high schools kids down here love, he connects with them and Miami couldn't afford to lose that, I guess the alternatives out there were not worth the risk of losing Randy. Best of luck to him and this is a great move for Tech since Mike Leach did not end up at "da U", I was beginnig to have nightmares of Miami hanging 50+ on every ACC team under that madman, however the bulleting board material and outright bluntness of Leach would made some great storylines down here.

Well, Shannon had an offer to be DC at Texas...will they now try for Tenuta?

A good hire for UM. He will do a good job for them, just what they needed.

That is my biggest fear this offseason, even if Texas gets Joe Kines, then will Bama try to get Tenutta? There is also rumglings/blind speculation/chatter/hot gas about Tenutta being considered to replace Mark DeAntonio at Cincinatti. I don't want to lose this guy, without him we would be in trouble, meaning 5-7 wins per season trouble.

??? How is he underqualified? That statement makes no sense. Do you know about his day to day responsibilities to know he's underqualified? He's been their DC for about 6 years and they've always played good defense under him. Sure, some of that was talent, which, btw, HE was the main man in bringing in. Schiano said no thanks. Leach doesn't have the so. FL ties and may not have been the best fit in terms of culture.

I think the hire is going to depend a lot on who he gets to run the offense. Miami has still had a great defense, but the offense has been sputtering the last few years. If he brings in someone good, then I think it could work out very well for them.

This is pretty much the consensus among the fan base down here, a lot of people perceive this to be a bad hire since it immediatelly does nothing to address the offensive side of the ball, Miami's real problem problem this year.

Well, then very few hires would address their issues on offense immediatel. The MAIN problem being that their qb has regressed. The system isn't very imaginative and it doesn't take advantage of the insane atheletic ability at the skill positions. All they really need is a guy with a pulse at OC and a HC that doesn't mind pulling the plug on a QB that isn't performing up to snuff...

This is a good hire because they do NOT want to lose Shannon and he's smart enough to know that he needs better braintrust on offense.

Yeah but everyone down here was expecting the Mike Leach hire, and everyone knows immediatelly what Leach brings to the table. By hiring a defensive coach in Shannon the expeculation over how to fix the offense grows, instead of being appeased by the hiring of a Leach or Rodriguez which would instantlly give an idea of the teams offensive midset. The jury will be out on Shannon until he addresses the offense and I don't think he can get the old offensive team now Ole Miss back (Soldinger RB, coach, Kehoe, line coach).

I can tell you Kyle Wright is the best QB at "da U" right now and Kirby "tuck it and run like you did in high school if the first read is not there" Freeman is the only backup, and I mean the only one, I believe there is no one behind him on scholarship. Wright was the best option, Freeman isn't even close and after Wright's injury when Kirby took over everyone saw why.

Many people outside of south Fla consider outside influence from current NFL playas, and an overall lack of personal and team discipline to be the bigger problem.

I want to see Miami and fsu playing at their best. I also hope to see Alabama get back on their game.
Athletic scholarships are renewable 1 year contracts.
Not that it will happen, but Shannon would get an instant load of respect by dropping the real troublemakers off the team. I hope he does.
