Miami now GT\'s biggest/best ACC rival?

The Yellow Jackets vs the Hurricanes was our 1st gm to sell out. That says something as I'd have never figured it would sell out before Notre Dame did with the GT fans' wrath of ND. We always have a Homecoming gm & it rarely sells out. There appears to be something special about whipping the Canes in Miami last season that has carried over to this yr & started what may be our 1st sellout gm each season the GT/Miami gm is in Atlanta.
I kinda like this vs the U & shows what could have been if Tech could just beat Fla St once. But since the FSU gm skips so many yrs, it's terrific about the Miami sellout.

Miami sells out 1st

Re: Miami now GT\'s biggest/best ACC rival?

Our ACC football rivals in order, IMO:

1. Clemins
2. UVAg
3. F$U
4. Miammaa
5. Tarholes
6. Wolfpackers
7. Dook
8. Vo Tech

Weak Florist, Maryland, BC whatever...

Ah, heck to me really only Clemins and UVA are our main rivals. Dook could be if their program were to rebound.

The rest are up for grabs...

Re: Miami now GT\'s biggest/best ACC rival?

I don't see anyone bumping out Clemson as our real ACC rival, that said, if we're competitive enough every year to make GT/Miami a big time conference game every year I will be very pleased with the program, considering that Miami can, even in their down years, pick and choose from almost any talent in the country.

What this does show is that AA marketing is doing something right and getting people excited about homecoming. If theres a weekend that Atlanta should be white and gold, thats it.

Re: Miami now GT\'s biggest/best ACC rival?

Well...the road to the BCS for us one day has to go through Miami and/or VaTech. I would have to say that puts them to the top of my list.

You make it to the ACC championship by putting them under...then that puts you one win/game away from the automatic BCS bid.

A win against either one of those is a two-game swing...against the other division that is not the case.

Re: Miami now GT\'s biggest/best ACC rival?

There are thousands of on again off again Miami fans in the Atlanta area first of all.
The fact that we kicked them in the OB last year makes this game a must see for them.
Beating any team once in the modern era does not make a true rivalry. Beat them again at home this year, and I will reconsider the question.

As others have said, Clemson and UVA are our only 2 true rivalries in the ACC.

Re: Miami now GT\'s biggest/best ACC rival?

Clemson
Miami
VT
UVA
NC ST
FSU (we just don't play them enough anymore...and never win anyway)
UNC
MD
etc etc

Re: Miami now GT\'s biggest/best ACC rival?

But I would have to assume everyone agrees they would rather beat Miami or VaTech than Clemson...those mean twice as much as the Clemson game in the ACC race.

I guess I'm too old, but theres more to winning a game than getting close to a conference championship, its a nice bonus, but to me its a lot more about pride and tradition.

Re: Miami now GT\'s biggest/best ACC rival?

Clemson is my favorite rival and favorite game.

Miami is probably next. Their thug rep is left over from days of old. They actually seem a pretty good group of kids with the exception of a few, and Coker has done quite a few things to make me thinks he's a quality guy.

VT is up there because they are a truly no class, thug life program, who I want to beat because I 'don't' like them or their fans.

I like the Wake game, even though we don't play every year. Ever since they beat us the way they did at our place a few years back, and the way they've played Clemson, I've felt they deserved every bit of respect they've gotten lately. Don't forget that's a school without about 5,000 students playing blow for blow with the big boys every week.

FSU is an obvious one.

I guess, in order:

CU - above
Miami - Key to the Division evry year
FSU - we owe them
VT - key to the Division every year
UNC - Division foe & I'm starting to like (& respect) Bunting - he's had a raw deal for a while and is clearly moving forward IMHO
UVA - Division foe - don't really like Groh
Duke - Division foe - Roof is a homeboy
Wake - they earned it
UMD - Fridge factor
BC - can play with any one any year - their Miami game has been a mirror image of our FSU game the last 10 years - can't wait to play them - ranked low only from lack of history with us - still love them for beating UGA in the (Music City Bowl?) with William Green a few years back
NCSt - deserve higher, but we are lucky enough to have done well enough against them that we take them for granted

Really I should have all 5 of our in Division Rivals first, but I just want the CU game so bad every year, and FSU just deserves a good shot from us sometime soon.

Those two - our division - then the next division.

NC St has been a quality program the last few years and we've not noticed as much as the rest of the ACC because we've played well against them, so we take that game for granted sometimes. We've also played them while they have had key injuries at fortuitous times as well.

They deserved at least two wins over the last 11 games, although I hate the way win #2 came last year.

Re: Miami now GT\'s biggest/best ACC rival?

Looking at rivalries purely from an Atlantic and Coastal divisional standpoint, I would look at VIRGINIA and MIAMI as two 'important rivals'. However, and I have harped on this before, if the divisional set-up were done properly, FSU and Clemson would be in the Coastal with UVA and VA Tech moving to the Atlantic.

Clemson IS GT's biggest ACC rival, but it does take away from it a bit (ever so slightly) with the two teams in separate divisions (although they do meet every year).

Another thing to consider is the 'reciprocate factor'. If you want to call Miami GT's biggest rival, how does the other side feel about it? Although they are in separate divisions I'm sure Miami considers FSU their biggest rival in the ACC.

The 'reciprocate' factor would have the ACC rivalry line-up as such:
(out of division rivalries)
FSU - Miami
Clemson - Georgia Tech

(inner division rivalries)
North Carolina - Duke
Wake Forest - North Carolina State
Boston College - Maryland
Virginia - Virginia Tech

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/soapbox.gif One more time. The FSU/Miami split was done with the idea that the two could meet in the ACC championship every other year or so (ticket sales, TV ratings, etc...). Because of this, one other rivalry had to be disturbed and the ACC went with the two teams that do not have an in-state rivalry in conference, GT and Clemson.

More on ACC rivals

Just to add a couple of thoughts to the rivalry topic...

By games played GT's top five ACC rivals would be:

Duke -73 (42-30-1)
Clemson -70 (45-23-2)
UNC -41 (21-17-3)
UVA -28 (13-14-1) *lost to UVA 3 years in a row to fall below .500, gotta start beating these guys again.
WF -27 (20-7)

Records against the rest:

BC (4-1)
FSU (7-12-1)
Maryland (12-5)
Miami (7-4)
NC State (16-9)
VA Tech (1-2)

IMO and considering history past & present, I consider GT's top five ACC rivals to be:

Clemson
UVA
FSU
Duke
Miami / UNC

Exactly!
I think it's just that Miami is a big game for us because of who Miami has been the last 2 decades.
I would definitely say that this year's game will be a "grudge" game for Miami, but not a rivalry game.

GT/clemmons on the other hand is very much a rivalry. Regardless of what happened the last year, this has been and will continue to be a big game for both players and fans.

Another rivalry test: If you can discuss the series with a complete stranger fan of the other team any time of the year...it's probably a rivalry.

Re: Miami now GT\'s biggest/best ACC rival?

I just want to make the BCS...and the best way to do that is to get to the ACC Championship where you play one game for it and you have a 50/50 shot.

The only way for us to the ACC Champ. is through Miami and VaTech...so I want those games badly!

I do agree that I despise Clemson more than any other ACC school...and despise Georgia more than anyone on the schedule obviously.

Re: Miami now GT\'s biggest/best ACC rival?

Let me make it clear that I do not dispise Clemson. I love that game and I that group of fans is awesome.

Agreed. Best away game we every have on the schedule, very close, great campus, and overall very high quality fans. (except of the one who threw a beer at me the last time we were there... guy needed an ass whoppin' but I didnt like the 7 to 2 odds so I just looke at him and said "well, you're definitely going to lose now, just because you're being a bastard"... all the other clemson folk apologizing for his behavior was very nice though)

Re: Miami now GT\'s biggest/best ACC rival?

Amen to that. Great fans that police themselves.

We need to meet up at the Clemson game this year techfowl, unless you come to a game up here in yankeeville (anywhere north of Rock Hill)!
