On the Field(TEAM)

Offence D+
Up from an F with the second half performance @ Maryland.
Defence C-
Inability to stop people on 3rd down and the big play is killing us
Special Teams B+
Down from an A with the missed field goals @ Maryland

Coaching

Offence F
duh! It did show signs of life in the second half last week however
Defence B+
JT doesn't get a free pass. Tackleing and slow starts keep it from being an A
Special Teams A
Very impressed. We always seem to be in the right place and we are not affraid to make a play

Offense: D; running game good, but overall offense isn't consistent nor effective yet...proof 500 yards of O and 19 points to show for it.
Defense: C; its been largely avg. Yes statistically in some categories it looks good, but poor tackling, and players not in position giving up big plays and lots of yardage.
Sp Teams: A; Bell missed a FG that was over his career long and in a tough position. Punting and Kickoffs have been GREAT. Players are playing well. Can't deduct this just b/c bell missed 1 52 yarder IMO

Coaching
Offense: F. Flat out F. Not putting the players in the best positions to win, predictable wildcat formation down by the goaline doesn't work (2 pt conversion) since there is no pass threat. Very inconsistent passing game. Holding penalties, dropped balls, what heck was that play calls.
Defense: B- I think JT outschemed himself vs MD. In the first half he played back and didn't blitz enough. He leaves his CBs on islands and in the 1st half, largely, the defense didn't perform well. However, he has showed good 2nd half adjustments, and Clemson was a nice performance. UVA was actually a nice performance too; the offense gave up 7 and a TO on sp teams gave up another 7. Also gets a B- b/c in 3 games this year, the defense started out looking sluggish and unprepared.
Sp Teams: A; Coaching has been great here. The improvements on kickoff covg year over year are nothing short of miraculous. Bell has largely been consistent again. The don't get the A+ for putting in A Smith for Evans in the UVA game, leading to a fumble and turnover. They should have left Evans in for every game.

We did have one partially blocked I think....but I still might have been a little harsh........ok A

I would have never made it as a teacher!

I think if "offense" was broken down, you would see that our running game has been very successful. Heck, we have been running the ball very well even when people know we are going to run it at them (last 4 downs vs MD excluded) - 23rd in the country according to NCAA.org. That being said, our pass "offense" is terrible (moved up to 103 in the nation though). Don't think overall it is worthy of a D though. We currently rank 73rd overall. Would put us more at a C.

As for "defense", think you are ok there. Once again, we are great when it comes to rushing (6 in the nation). Passing sucks (71st), netting us to a #16 in total defense.

Special teams has to get an A though. The two field goals that were missed were not easy field goals at all. We are #1 in the country in net punting. #13 in kickoff returns. #1 in kickoff return defense. #40 in punt returns. #19 in punt return yardage defense. Pretty strong stats there, regardless of a few missed field goals.

Now, some other intersting stats...we are #80 in penalties per game. #11 in turnover margin. Tied for #1 with fewest passes intercepted. Tied for #2 for fewest sacks allowed. #1 in tackles for a loss. Tied for# 2 for sacks. 109th in 3rd down conversion percentage. Some very good (and bad) stuff mixed together.

All that being said, these are only stats. We played some cupcakes, but so has everyone else by now. It also doesnt take into account getting the job done when it needs to get done. Agree with most everyone though that coaching has been the worst of it all so far...

For anyone interested in looking at this stuff, it can be found at http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/natlRank.jsp?year=2007&div=4&site=org

I think our bad 3rd down percentage hurts us quite a bit, and BC flat out shut us down in the running game, and when you really think about offense you think about points. Then again, when you play for field goals on every series that hurts the grade as well, but that probably should fall under the coaches grade.
