This is an example of where maybe the administration takes a tougher stance than others on athletes.
I'll stay out of the fray of right or wrong but, regardless, if we had similar standards as others he might still be on the team. I wish him the best and maybe this will turn out for him. What a player, just a tremendous motor. BTW - CPJ is a good guy.

Testing for marijuana is ööööing stupid. He should have NEVER been kicked off the team for it. Calvin even admitted he smoked it when he was at Tech. It is less harmful than alcohol and even ööööing Tylenol.

Dammit. Sorry Mills. I hope you make millions of dollars someday in the NFL and are able to forget about how stupid our society is.

No one wins in this situation, but it's tough for me to fault Tech on this one. Three times is a lot.

Yes, marijuana use is very normal, and likely no more dangerous than alcohol (or even less dangerous than it.)

But the fact remains that it's against federal and state law and, more importantly, against team policy. In life there are a lot of rules that are dumb but we still have to follow.

You can't get caught breaking the rules once and get warned, then get caught breaking them again and get told you're on thin ice, then get caught breaking them a third time and expect to remain on the team. If that was the case you might as well not even have rules.

Absolutely less damaging than alcohol, not likely. An acquaintance of mine, heavy drinker, died from liver cirrhosis about a month back. Alcohol is absolutely deadly compared to pot.

“... knew the consequences of failed drug tests, but said it was difficult to stop.”

And the chorus of “but alcohol “ jumps in missing the point.

You can, in life, choose which rules to follow. You can not choose the consequences.

If you drink too much you will pay.

If you use drugs you will pay.

I don’t think marijuana is any worse than booze, but both are bad if not used in extreme moderation. As an old guy, you can really tell the difference in 60 and 70 year olds who moderated their use and those who didn’t. That is, the ones who have not already died from their abuse. I quit booze at around 50, so I’m kind of in the middle, health wise.

Yawn, look at AJC writing long pieces on kicked off Tech players.

Maybe other schools do not have any former players that have such a potentially positive comeback story as this one?

I think it actually put CPJ in a positive light.

And I wonder if CPJ would have stepped into an interview that would prove negative to GT?

I really wish nothing but the best for him. I was hoping that maybe he could have gotten another opportunity to play for us but that doesn't look possible.

I'm betting on unlikely to turn it around after failing half his classes at Grey Gardens Botanical College or whatever it is. Actually, that might be a good fit for him.

By all accounts, Mills is a good kid, and I hope he overcomes the youthful bad decisions to make the most of his talent. But given the opportunity that he had, most kids would happily give up a lot more than weed to pursue their dream.

This is more about following the rules than about marijuana. This guy is not exactly Synjyn Days.

Whether it’s a stupid rule or not, he knew the consequences and was given three chances.

ööööing sucks though. Went from having one of the best RB tandems in the country to one of the worst in an off-season. Mills would probably be 1st team all conference heading into fall practic. And worse we lost Marshall a month before b/c he wanted to be the guy.

Flunking his classes at a Kansas JC reveals a larger issue. Needs to get his head out of the clouds.

I don't know. I liked the article. Mills owned up for his failures, and it sounded like CPJ has even taken the time to check in on him.

Also, if you're watching "Last Chance U," Garden City Community College is featured as an opponent. Pretty interesting stuff.

I think this is absolutely true, but I'll go ahead and jump in the fray and throw in two counterfactuals:

1) Weed isn't all that bad for most people, and the stigma is thankfully going away. However,

2) Weed absolutely damages your study ethic, and GT football players must have a good study ethic for two reasons. One, GT classes, and two, our offense requires studying.

There have certainly been seasons (2015 comes to mind) when it seemed pretty clear that our team didn't do a whole lot of studying about where to be on the field, both on offense and on defense. So a strong message to the team that weed, while not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, is very very bad for GT football players in particular, is a net positive for our program.
