Hey its been almost four months since I have posted which means business is good, but with a slow day tomorrow a couple of beers and a great dinner from Waffle House I thought I would chime in with a couple of thoughts.
First off, I am not a fan of CCG's offense and offensive coordinator. The Gator Bowl was a gleaming exposure of why I feel like this.
On the other hand commitment to players and beliefs in the face of difficult times is what turns boys into men and losers into winners. Recruits and their parents have looked at GT and CCG and decided that with all of the alternatives that they have that GT is the place for them. Today it looks as if another recruit Morgan Burnett has made a similar decision.
In my opinion CCG may be lacking in modern day offensive scheming knowledge and has a coordinator similar to him. What he has an abundance of though is character, and I would guess he has surrounded himself with coaches that likewise are of high character.
Having been a former recruit of Bill Curry that was attracted to GT because of a coach of character I see many similarities between today and twenty years ago. CCG is building a program at GT. There are still many things that need to be adjusted/changed, but I believe that when you find a high quality coach with character that you have a coach to keep that high quality players will want to play for.
This years recruiting class is stellar, and made more so if the commitment of Morgan Burnett is true. The character of these young me also seems to be stellar and are the type of young men that GT will build its program around to be to continual championship contenders.
This years class also is very similar to the classes that Bill Curry signed some twent years ago. He was able to turn the GT program around with three or four classes from being a program that was completely decimated by Alabama in 82 to beating them only a few years later. The players that were members of that team signed with GT because of the character of Bill Curry.
Reflecting upon the lives and careers of several of my friends that I played with at GT, the underlying theme of these individuals is success. Player by player you can look at the young men that Bill Curry recruited and you will find multiple success stories. Giving young men the developmental training to become successful in life as well as the opportunity to be winning football players is one of the gratest gifts you can ask for as a player.
I believe that CCG is utilizing the same ingredients that Bill Curry utilized many years ago to develop championship calibre teams. Just as with CCG there were naysayers of Bill Curry twenty years ago. The fact remains though that it is his character that attracted those of us that helped turn GT into the right direction, and it is the character of CCG that will do the same. This year is a turning point In believe and CCG has recruited a class that will turn the tide for GT for several years to come.
On a separate note, those of you that have read my sporadic posts over the last couple of years know that I coach middle school football and have also coached at the high school level. I have never been so dissappointed in my years of coaching than to see the AAAAA and AA championship games end in ties. I sincerely hope that this rule is changed in the future because it hurts as bad to tie as it does to lose. How this rule was still in existance is unbelievable to me but this year should change that.
Well I still have half of my omelette and some hashbrowns left (not to mention the Pizza Hut leftovers from lunch) that I am going to warm up in the microwave so I must go. Since I may not post for a while again I will list a couple of my wishes.
CCG stays
This years verbals sign because this will be a formidable class
CCG adapts to a more "aggressive" offense
Tenuta stays
Character stays the centerpiece of GT football
