Watching games yesterday and noticed numerous players with their mouthpieces dangling from their face masks during the middle of the play. Is this no longer a penalty? or am I just really old.

Quarterback basically can't wear it, right? Outside he can't audible or do the snap count. Probably some other players need to be able to talk presnap too.

Watching KC, Mahomes wears a mouthpiece that looks like Invisaligns. Suppose other QBs wear the same.

This doesn’t make any senses. They are molded to your teeth, it’s not hard to bark signals with one in. I was a QB growing up and always wore a mouthpiece.

I know in the pros it’s not a penalty but most players still wear one for good reasons.

Never played, that's actually good to know. Thanks!

I’ve only played HS. But imo the only protective equipment needed to play modern football is a really good helmet and very light shoulder pads. Mouth-guards, hip pads, knee pads are a waste.

Man you must have never gotten lit up by a 225 lb senior as a 150 lb freshman. Lucky

Side note - I loved the O'Leary era mouthpieces we were. Granted, they were black and the wrong shade of gold, but the point remains. Definitely unique.

It’s required equipment in this state for everything up through HS at least. Mouthpieces are also considered key factors in preventing concussions. I coach MS football right now and have had several players removed from the field because they didn’t have one in.

When I played it was a 5 yard penalty and if you got called for it, a 2nd time, you were ejected. But, I last played in high school and it was quite a "few" years ago.
