Mr Braine thought GT was \'locked in\'.
Yep, that's correct. Until Virginia Tech dropped their candy in the dirt & lost as 14 pt favorites in the ACC Championship game, Georgia Tech was 'locked in' to the Peach Bowl. Va Tech lost the Orange Bowl & fell to the Gator while subsequintly losing the Peach Bowl for Ga Tech.
Virginia concentrated on wooing the Music City Bowl, correctly thinking that Nashville was their best bet. AD Braine & the rest of GT were thinking, correctly, that the Yellow Jackets were going to get the Gator or Peach. Then the big curveball broke a full 12 inches to fall into the strike zone for a called 3rd strike & Braine was called out, looking. The fallback to the Music City was now gonna be UVa's, & their promises, while GT falls all the way to 8th, & last, pick in the ACC.
In this very good article from Doug Doughty of the Roanoke Times, Coach Braine sounds like he just did not see the pitch coming & was coolly outpoliticked by all eligible ACC Bowl teams.
'locked in', allright
