Mr Braine thought GT was \'locked in\'.

Yep, that's correct. Until Virginia Tech dropped their candy in the dirt & lost as 14 pt favorites in the ACC Championship game, Georgia Tech was 'locked in' to the Peach Bowl. Va Tech lost the Orange Bowl & fell to the Gator while subsequintly losing the Peach Bowl for Ga Tech.
Virginia concentrated on wooing the Music City Bowl, correctly thinking that Nashville was their best bet. AD Braine & the rest of GT were thinking, correctly, that the Yellow Jackets were going to get the Gator or Peach. Then the big curveball broke a full 12 inches to fall into the strike zone for a called 3rd strike & Braine was called out, looking. The fallback to the Music City was now gonna be UVa's, & their promises, while GT falls all the way to 8th, & last, pick in the ACC.
In this very good article from Doug Doughty of the Roanoke Times, Coach Braine sounds like he just did not see the pitch coming & was coolly outpoliticked by all eligible ACC Bowl teams.

'locked in', allright

Mr. Braine should know by now that people who make assumptions in a cutthroat business like college football do so at their peril. It is clear that once again he was asleep at the switch but no matter the retirement parachute is as golden as ever.

However...the odds of VT losing to FSU were slim...no one thought that would happen. I know MANY FSU in my neck of the woods 3 hrs. away that sat on their tickets to the ACC Championship because they knew they would lose...the apathy among the FSU fanbase right now is amazing.

The FSU fans

missed what was easily the Seminoles 'best' game of the yr. They looked very good in the Gator Bowl & it was no fluke that they beat Va Tech so handily. VT appeared to think the gm would be easy & just didn't seem to put out much effort.

The crying shame is that it opened the door for an undeserving FSU to get the Orange Bowl @ 8-4 while knocking a deserving GT team from the Peach. Funny how the Butterfly Effect works sometimes.

If Braine was on the offensive lobbying for the Peach, that's fine, although I posted before the FSU win I doubted the Peach would deliver. The problem is that he forgot the defensive strategy that we deserved no worse than Charlotte. Thus, the Wolfpack got what we deserved, with the certain support of Greensboro, regardless of their protests to the contrary.
