Let's start off by saying I am a very fierce competitor in anything I do, or have done, be it baseball, football, tennis, golf, half rubber, parcheesi, chinese checkers, poker, hearts, etc. I play to win. I was/am good at some of them, bad in others. But I know what it takes to compete.
I enjoyed last night's game as much as I ever had as a Tech fan for 48 years. The atmosphere was great, great weather, a coach I believe in, and watching my yellow jackets play as good as they can. I adore our football players, whatever the outcome as I know it takes a special person to play at GT with our academic requirements and our expectations of greatness on the field. I love our guys, win or lose, always have and always will. And I absolutely love our coach! As far as I am concerned, he can retire here, as long as he keeps his desire to win as he has shown this year, regardless of his record. I love PJ.
BUT, like many of you that have more than a fart for a brain, I wonder about this offense winning an national chmpionship. To call it a triple option is not doing it justice, it is much more than that. I think of it as an under center spread option. I have gone to several opponents boards and the most believable analysis to me is that we will win many games under PJ and his offense, but we will never win a National Championship under this offense. Why? Because if a defense can stop the B back dive up the middle with great defensive tackles and a good middle linebacker that stop the dive, we are cooked. It as been proven so far this year. And we will run into such a team or 2 before the NC game for sure in any year.
But I am still happy for 9-4, 10-3 seasons to come.
Comments?

Teams today DO NOT play assignment defense. Show me one if I am wrong. Rushing to the ball is the new thing.

I am more concerned right now about how we haven't played well on the road this year IMO. Our young team has loved the home field advantage against FSU and UMia but we must cope with the largest hostile crowd we will face next week. And they cheat too.

Call Paul and ask him. Seriously, saying that if a team can stop the dive and they stop the offense means you don't believe that there really is more to the offense than we've seen this year. And if you believe that, you have no idea what PJ does. There is so much more to his offensive package that we haven't seen that it isn't funny. We can't pass this year, we aren't seeing many of the plays that run off the base option and we have seen absolutely nothing of Paul's run and shoot packages. Don't worry. It will probably be 3-4 years until we see everything this offense can do.

I still believe the B back dive is the key to this offense (why do we run it so much when it is not working in games that we lose?). You think we can have a run and shoot QB and receivers that can run our option offense at the D-1A level with our academics? Get real man.

Don't forget about the other side of the ball. We've won games in which the offense was less than stellar, and against some decent teams.

Also, the same can be said for any offense. What happens when a great passing offense that thrives off the deep ball plays a team that has great corners and safeties? When you have bulldoze over guys and run right past them, it kind of negates good defense. And adjustments are a part of the game...

Somehow I think Mike Leach probably had his doubters. There was probably a pretty large group of people who never thought one of his teams could be 10-0 at this point.

You are missing my point. I am not talking about going 10-0. I am talking about going 14-0 or 13-1 or 12-2 for a NC.

I'm not sure you are getting his point either...

But are you implying that Texas Tech has no chance to win the national championship?

Yes exactly!! They will never beat Oklahoma and winner of UA/UF.
Want to bet? 10 to 1 for a dollar?

Have you seen our recruiting class so far this year? Recruits are beginning to buy into this system and, even moreso, this coach. I expect our class to be at least top 15 by end of year.

When the O-line recruits start playing, this O will click, and no one will be able to stop it. Like someone else said, our D is also top-notch - which will keep us in any game long enough for that one big play to happen.

I understand your concerns, but I certainly don't agree with them, and I hope you are proven wrong soon (bc that would mean we've won the MNC :fingersx:).

I've already lost $50 to my bro-in-law after our game against UNC so I'll pass on the wager. :p

I've seen TT play against UT... and TT smacked them around until the end. What does TT do different than UF? They both run the spread offense.

Whether they win out remains to be seen, but 10-0 is certainly the right way to start to get there. Like PJ, Leach has an offensive system that people have scoffed at as being gimmicky and one that won't work consistently against the top tier teams. It has and Leach uses a fluid playbook.

All offenses are adjustable for defenses but can also be adaptable. for instance, Texas Tech mixes in the run much more now than before.

UF has better athletes all around and TT will be killed if they play them.

Ole Miss didn't get killed when they played UF.

Anyway, I thought this thread was about types of offenses; I didn't realize you were talking about the ability to recruit players.

Not to mention that Miami played Florida very close for three quarters but got murdered last night by a team that runs an offense that will never win a national championship.

Are you a fierce competitor like a over bearing little league father or are you more like the guy who kicks his golf ball away from the rough?

About the offense...

Name one other offense that gives you 4 running backs (QB, BBack, 2 ABacks) and 4 receivers (2 SEs and 2 ABacks) on the field at the same time. Ask any DC if they would like to defend against that type of capability. CPJ is a genius at taking whatever the defense gives us as well as keeping the defense off balance. Case in point, BeBe throwing on a reverse on the first play and then two quick passes to the receivers on the second and third play. Do you think Miami's corners might have been a little bit reluctant to come up hard on the pitch man after that?

LOL B-O-R!

What did nebraska / osborne run? How many NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS has PJ coached in? How many has he WON or been a part of winning? You guys are crazy to think we could actually win a national championship.

PLUS, don't you guys know that this offense can never work in the ACC?!?!?!?!
;)

Design an offense that would lead GT to a national championship. Give us the blue print.

Let me get this straight: You've watched 11 games in the first season with another coaches's recuits and are ready to scrap it? What is wrong with people? Are you paying attention?
