My ignorance in the area of recruiting

I'm all worked up about the upcoming football season, as I know we all are. I am psyched about our '07 recruiting class thus far. However, I am trying to attain some perspective due to the fact that this is the first time I have kept an eye on recruiting when it was going really well.

We have 12 commits - I won't bother with estimating attrition because I would like to theorize in a vacuum.

It seems I remember CCG being quoted as saying we hope to sign 17 or 18 guys - this I don't understand. If one can sign 18, won't one sign 18? So, hypothetically, let's say 18.

This leaves 6 openings for bright, talented young men.

For which of these guys do we really have a chance?

Claytor
Nesbitt
McCray
Everson
Dwyer

Are there any other big names I am leaving out?

It seems we have enough space for these guys, along with a "Tenuta Special", small LB.

Which of our current commits is likely to fall of the wagon, somehow?

What happens when we have too many guys accept our offers?

Are there any transfers out there we may try to grab?

Does anyone think the high rated players are going to keep coming?

Should I just lay off the recruiting junk and get some work done?

My main questions are in bold. I glean a lot of solid recruiting insight from many of you. It is this that I am trying to tap.

Thank you in advance

Supposedly 2 of our 12 commits are going to enroll early.
The only benefit of enrolling early is the guys can participate in spring practice. As far as scholarship limitations, we are limited by the 79 team total.

Casey Matthews is one that we are leading for that you left off the list.
He is Clay Matthews son(former NFL OL and Falcons OL).

Does anyone know what position Clay...

Matthews' Dad played at TECH? I remember missing out on Clay and Bruce when their family moved from Chicago to LA.

Claytor - We definitely have a chance, but I don't have as good a feeling about him as many other people do. He's getting pressured from all sides quite a bit, and I think it's getting to him.

Nesbitt - We are likely his leader, although he is playing it pretty close to the vest and not giving out too many hints.

McCray - He asked Rivals to remove his "committed" status to Florida, so I'd say we have a decent chance. From reading a lot of his past articles, I'd still think Florida is most likely where he ends up, but I think Tech has a decent chance of getting him.

Everson - I think we're in very good shape with him. He and his dad absolutely loved Tech when they came earlier this year, and I don't think that has changed. Our main competition is UCLA, but I think he ends up at Tech.

Dwyer - We're in it with him just as much as anyone else. He doesn't seem to be close to making a decision, and has recently said he's "wide open", so it may partly depend on if we have any spots left once he's ready to make a decision. I would assume we'd try to save a spot for him.

Are there any other big names I am leaving out?

As some other posters have said: Casey Matthews. He's very close to making a decision, and it's between Tech and Oregon. I'd say it's about 50/50 that we get him.

A few more:

Adrien Robinson - Our coaches LOVE this guy. His performance at one of our camps was outstanding, so we are after him hard. He's an incredible athlete at 6'4'' 225, and could play WR or bulk up some and play TE. Only issue with him is that he needs to score a little bit better on the ACT.

Cam Baker - FAST wideout from Arkansas (recently ran a 4.3 at a camp at Arkansas). His brother plays for Arkansas, and it looks like it's between Arkansas, Tech, and Tennessee.

Clyde Yandell - Big OL prospect from the same high school as Tech committ Mario Butler, so we have a shot. He hasn't narrowed it down too much yet, so it's hard to say exactly what our chances are. Our coaches would take both him and Claytor if we could get them both.

Chris Little - He hasn't been listing Tech, but apparently Giff made some inroads with him recently when he took an unofficial to Tech. One of top OL in state, and one to keep an eye on.

A few others to keep an eye on: Jason Peters (DE), DeMario Ambrose (DE), and Morgan Burnett (S).

Which of our current commits is likely to fall of the wagon, somehow?

I don't think any of them are LIKELY to fall off the wagon, but we've had some bad luck with this the last few years. Hopefully our coaches do a better job of holding on to them this time. With all the changes we've made, I think they will.

What happens when we have too many guys accept our offers?

I don't think this will happen, as we will pull offers once we start to get too full. Any attrition during this season will open up some extra spots, too.

Are there any transfers out there we may try to grab?

Not that I've heard, but who knows. We just had Calvin Booker transfer in from Auburn. FYI, he'll be on the HOPE scholarship this year, and won't count against our numbers.

Does anyone think the high rated players are going to keep coming?

Yes. We have a very good recruiting staff now, so I don't see any reason it would fall off unless coaches leave or we have a disastrous season.

Should I just lay off the recruiting junk and get some work done?

Perhaps I should do the same. :hsugh:

At this point, my money is on Claytor to go to LSU.
Tech and Ohio State are widely thought to be the two frontrunners, but that's where most of the pressure is coming from (along with UGA), so I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he ended up at Auburn or LSU.

I would believe we are in a "take the top athletes" mode at this point.

I think we take the next six out of these ten:

- Nic Claytor
- Jonathan Dwyer
- Jason Peters
- Josh Nesbitt
- Cedric Everson
- Casey Matthews
- Cam Baker
- Morgan Burnett
- Chris Little
- DeAngelo McCray

Next group:
- Clyde Yandell (he could be in top group...not positive)
- Demario Ambrose (if he assures us AUB/AL could not swing him)
- Tony Tucker (if academics straighten out)
- Sacoby Carter (if academics straighten out)
- Albert Rocker (looks like he wants to wait)
- Lorenzo Edwards (he has a long list)

I am not sure what is going on with:
- Brandon Robinson
- Jamire Williams
- Derek Knight
- Malachi Lewis
- Quentin Castille

Players on the outside looking in because of scholarship limitations right now:
- Nicolai Shwarzkopf
- Patrick Hampton
- Chad Diehl
- Dan Allen
- Carson Byrd
- William Anderson
- Cameron Ford
- Brett Moncrief
- Jared Cooper
- Tyler Bowen
- Golden Tate
- Dorian Wood

If I understand correctly, the number of 18 /19 that is batted around is dependent on circumstances such as grades, transfers opening up a scholly that does not exist on paper today.
