State of The Program Address

My fellow Tech fans,
Let me start by saying that Saturday's ballgame is one that should propel us in the bowl game, next season, and especially next November when UGA comes calling. If that doesn't fire us up, then nothing ever will. A 51-7 drubbing should teach you a lot of things. Let's hope it does just that for our players and coaching staff.
As for the future, I think we will end up in Seattle once again playing Oregon(supposing Virginia goes to Charlotte in the Continental Tire Bowl). The seniors need to win this one just to gain back some self-respect and dignity if nothing else. I am a firm believer that any bowl game, no matter where or when, is better than no bowl game at all. I look forward to playing December 30(assuming we do travel to Seattle) to see how this team responds. Contrary to popular belief right now, WE HAVE A GOOD FOOTBALL TEAM. We beat then undefeated and 8th ranked N.C State and ended Virginia's six game winning streak. We almost won at Clemson, despite 4 turnovers and a driving rainstorm. We SHOULD HAVE beaten a team(Florida State) that should've beaten the #1 team in country(Miami). We gave up big plays and defensive touchdowns against Maryland and Florida State and special teams scores against Clemson. We have been in every single game we played this season at the wire, except 2, and every single game at the half, except Saturday's debacle. Injuries, injuries, and more injuries. First, it was Touchdown Tony Hollings and Sidney Ford. Then it got contagious with countless numbers of injuries. Then on Saturday, early in the game, we lose Gordon Clinkscale, our top tailback. Ace never got on track after the Maryland game. Although he had a huge day at North Carolina. Jermaine Hatch disappeared off the face of the earth. Johnathan Jackson's season was ended in the ACC finale against Duke. Michael Sampson didn't see much action, so what are we supposed to do at the RB slot. In my opinion, our best QB on Saturday was WR, Johnathan "Freddy" Smith. To make a long story short, a depleted core of talent both experienced and youthful, is hard to overcome no matter how good you are.
Coaching. In one word: suspect. However, this is Chan's first year and as I have said, which is beginning to become a cliche: Give Chan a chance. One season does not determine how good a coach is. Al Groh had a poor season last year. This year he turned things around and had a six game winning streak, not to mention losing close games early to Colrado State and someone else. Maybe I am wrong about Chan. Maybe he does suck at the college level. But we will never know unless we give him a chance. His honeymoon is definetly over, but I belive he will succeed here. Now, on to Dave Braine. If Dave Braine can make such a brilliant hire as Paul Hewitt and Bond Shymansky, then I trust taht he made a good football hire in Chan Gailey. A trial run must be given to Chan if he is to have a good stint on the Flats.
Fan Support. I sense that there are some fair weather fans on this board. Sure we just got the beating of our lives, but we must stick with our team through thick and thin, peaks and valleys, and ups and downs. Like I have said before, I will not and refuse to give up on this team. Let's band together and get through this.
Brief Synopsis and Summary. I belive we are headed for better days. We will not be the cellar of the ACC. In conclusion, we need to get behind our players, coaches, and administrators if we are to succeed. Again, we have a good football team! Go Jackets!
P.S. All views and opinions expressed in this address are those of me, gtfan1147. Hopefully, what I have said is sufficient and will come true. However, my opinions have a distinct possibility of being incorrect and wrong. Thank you for reading this long, drawn-out post and Go Jackets!

Nice post, and I mostly agree. But the comparison to Al Groh is not holding water. He recruited right out of the gate and has brought in superior classes. I haven't seen anything from CG that would warrant confidence in his ability to attract top talent to Tech.

That's the other issue. Given tougher academic requirements both from the NCAA and the powers-that-be at Tech, is there any way on earth we can get 25 quality student-athletes here that would allow us to compete at the top tier of Div 1. We've never had to recruit to these standards before, and that is likely why we have achieved the football success we have. Baskeball and baseball are different - two or three quality recruits can make a program. With football - especially with injuries and such - you need to almost be two-deep with stars at every position.

CG knew it going in, and only took the job 'cause DB guaranteed we have the resources to spend whatever it takes to find these 25 players. The wrinkle is that Stanford, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Duke, Northwestern, Cal and other academically oriented schools are scratching and clawing for the same core group of players. Are there enough to go around? Probably not, but time will tell.

One thing I forgot to say in my original post:
Chan has a lot to learn both at Tech and in the college ranks. Given due time, he will succeed here in my opinion.

I agree... was and am pissed about Saturday.. but Gailey will get it on track...

I long for the days when going to a bowl game was an honor earned by the few teams that had proven their worth over the season, not an opportunity to make up for a disappointing season capped off by getting their faces rubbed into the "G" in historic proportions.

Tech's bowl record is even more astonishing when you consider how selective bowl invitations used to be.
