Paul Johnson could not have made a more controversial, more angst filled hire, that alienates his fanbase more than this one.

    Wow.

    Just wow.

It's clear to me that there were serious structural problems at Auburn under Gene Chizik. They were blessed with a once in a lifetime talent in Cam Newton who essentially alleviated the underlying issues and virtually singlehandedly won the NC for them.

Chizik was probably a really really bad manager, a fact which came out this year when they had their worst season EVER.

With competent head coaches and a generally competent support staff, Roof performed average at Penn State, Duke and UCF considering the circumstances.

However, Penn State's defense finished in the top 5 nationwide in 2011 (top 20 in 2012 with Roof) which means that they had a lot experience and depth and player leadership.

UCF finished with a top 10 defense in 2010 without Roof and Roof had them at top 10 in 2011.

Duke was the same. About 2-3 spots improvement in the ranking.

This indicates that he is a person who can't make it worse but there is no evidence he can make it better.

Sadly, I feel that this is the beginning of the end.

I sure hope this turns out good, but I honestly thought the OP was joking. Does everyone remember 2009 when we said: "If only we had a defense, we'd be in the national championship hunt"?

We said the exact same thing when Roof was here. Surely PJ knows that.

WTF are you talking about. AU defense in 2010 was just a few spots ahead of tech and ranked 55 in points per game and 56 in yards per game.

I swear some of you on this site just make stuff up.

You're right. Roof was the most divisive possible hire. Even moreso than if he'd hired Gailey or Petrino. CPJ is sadistic. It's going to be a long offseason on StingTalk.

Look, I hope I am dead wrong and ole Roofy boy has learned a thing or two. But from what I watched every Saturday from the lower East stands was garbage when he was here. Every d#mn week was a shoot out.

At best this is a sideways move, maybe not as bad as I expect, but mark my words, Groh = Roof. Not Groh < Roof.

    Okay okay okay.

    This needs to be said.

I HAVE A SOURCE, WHO IS CLOSE TO TED ROOF AND ALSO CLOSE TO TECH FOOTBALL, WHO LIVES NEAR ME (may have given the source away) who told me once that Ted's bad years under O'Leary were because O'Leary was overruling him on game strategy. All those games where we did "4-3 base defense" with no adjustment even when it was failing miserably were supposedly O'Leary's doing. According to this source.

    So maybe that's something.

The only thing I will say is he was awful when he coached here before.

I made a post saying why per-game metrics are very flawed in evaluating defenses and you respond with per-game metrics. When your defense scores in three plays every time, you are going to give up more points and more yards.

I will admit that he did have the Nittany Lion D playing well this season. His time at Auburn reminds me the '09 D. I just want to see our scoring D to improve and I'll be a happy.

Could be a good hire. We'll see. But he absolutely without a doubt could not have picked a more divisive hire. Makes you wonder whether he did it on purpose.

The source I mentioned above has instilled some faith in me, more than I would have had otherwise anyway.

But the hire was awfully öööö divisive. Roof needs to realize that coming in, and prepare for it. Maybe someone who knows him could chat about that to him to give him an idea what sort of Sweetingstorm he's walking into.

Is Paul Johnson the one doing the hiring?

This is true, but it shouldn't really matter at this point. It's win or go home time for Johnson so style points or other feelings prolly won't matter for whether or not he stays here.

With no permanent AD, I'd imagine so. Though Griffin may have had a hand too.

if you have a better method let me know. Otherwise i will stick to this as it GENERALLY over a 15 year career of evaluating a coach or system works to be true.

Can you find an example here or there, sure, but statistically this is the best representation. Stop using single examples as evidence that something on a general basis doesn't work.

It does. It shows you year after year what the best D's are and it is generally right.
