My take on the coaching search

I think we purposely offered PJ a lower salary. I don't think its a matter of not having the bucks to get that deal done. If we wanted him I think we could have had them. I think prominent boosters put pressure on Clough to force DRad into doing more due diligence. My best guess is that Muschamp and/or Hatcher are on hold while DRad threw an offer he knew PJ wouldn't take to satisfy the process. Now that PJ is off the table, DRAd can move forward with his original plan or a version of it.

Offering PJ $1.2 million doesn't make any sense otherwise.

This is my hope, my guess, and logically makes sense. I just cannot imagine the GTAA, the Foundation Board, and Wayne Clough tripping over their own dicks this much. But if that's the case, my confidence in Wayne and the powers that be is pretty much going to be shot.

I'm eagerly looking forward to what happens over the next two days and what smoke comes out of the Edge building before I render my opinion, but if the Coaching search goes so far south that we end up seriously hurting ourselves, you can bet that I'm not going to be renewing my season tickets next year.

Did we offer PJ $1.2 million? I thought we matched SMU's offer.

I think we made a good faith offer to PJ. Maybe he will take it. Maybe SMU will out spend us. Either way, it is a no lose situation for us. Either we get PJ, who is a good coach or we get someone else from our list. If PJ turns us down, DRad will probably have a little more money to work with to put together another staff (and I am taking about more than just a head coach).

Getting out spent by SMU would highlight how much a good staff really costs.

IF my contact was correct that PJ wanted to come to Tech, perhaps DRad only offered 1.2 to see if indeed he really wanted to come to Tech. So if it became a bidding war, we weren't interested.

What do you mean "if the Coaching search goes so far south"? That it takes 3 weeks to get a coach? When does it end up hurting ourselves?

What about the buyout on PJs current contract?
There is more to PJ than just his annual pay.

When I say the coaching search went South, I mean if we don't get one of the guys we targeted and start praying that we get anyone at all. Why support an organization that reeks of incompetence?

It sounds to me more like the Old Guard got played by PJ. He wasn't on our (DRad's) original list for consideration. Then, suddenly, he announces his interest in our job after the Army-Navy game is over and he has already been linked to the SMU and Duke jobs. SMU wouldn't consider Duke a threat in a bidding war, but they would have to take an offer from Tech seriously.

Why was PJ's announcement of interest in our job so public, when he wasn't even on our list to begin with? And why would DRad drop everything to suddenly consider him, when he didn't even want to talk to him before? There's some big money alum that's going to look like a dumbass in the search committee meeting, if you ask me.

I was under the impression PJ was on our list to begin with, but that we didn't expect to get him for money reasons, and we just tested the waters with him for money and found out we were right.

No shame in that. That's why there's a "process."

Pfft. Tenuta was the first guy Dan Radikovich announced was on our list. We're not slipping past Tenuta, and we've got til the end of December to offer him. And Tenuta IMO would be every bit as good a candidate as Muschamp.

Either candidate needs a good supporting staff. Who has the final say in the assistants or any offensive minds brought in. Do you trust JT or WM to be able to bring those guys in?

Other than rumors and supposed insider leaks, no one actual knows who has been targeted in our search. While it is fun to speculate, we really don't know where things stand. To take such strong positions on how we have screwed up the whole process have no basis in fact. If that is your opinion then fine you are welcome to it but don't declare it is the gospel when you really don't know.

I am sure whatever happens, some will be happy and some will be pissed off. Thats the nature of things. I can tell you this, I for one am just glad we are making a change and moving in a new direction. We were stuck in neutral and even if we have to go in reverse for a few years it is worth taking a chance on making things better down the road.

Go Jackets!

..seeing how I like our current support staff, I figure Jon Tenuta couldn't do too poorly by just giving everyone a 1 year extension.

beej67,
who's thong is currently in knots

Boy we've come a long way since we stopped accepting mediocrity, right BOR?
