My thoughts on the VT game

I think BC's defense is better at defending the triple option than VT's. We all know VT is fast, but speed doesn't necessarily stop the 3O, because all it takes is one mis-read or one guy to over-persue and Nesbitt/Dwyer is off to the races. Boston College was able to crash down in the middle with their huge defensive tackles which forced us outside on almost every run. Knowing that Brace and Raji had the middle locked down, the LBs were free to run freely and make plays on the outside. This kept us at bay for 3.5 quarters, and damn near cost us the game. Luckily, all it takes is one bad read by the defense and it's 6.

VT almost always has solid-to-great DE's, but they're negated in the triple option. Unless we're playing some Julius Peppers freak of nature, a DE isn't going to make many plays. It's all the DTs. If they by themselves can clog the middle, then it will be hard for us.

I don't think VT has the defensive tackles to pull it off. I know our OL is a work in progress, but they're not going to face players like Raji/Brace again. All they have to do is hold their own and block well enough to allow Dwyer to run up the middle. If that happens, we're headed for the win, because we'll be able to take it outside when we want to as opposed to being forced outside.

That said, VT can easily win this game and they should be favored. Lane Stadium is like walking into a lion's den, Bud Foster is a very smart DC, and Beamer Ball scares the hell out of me especially considering our FG unit doesn't seem to have their stuff down. I can definitely picture a blocked FG returned for a TD. If that happens, all bets are off.

ps- Tyrod Taylor doesn't scare me as much this year. He's going to get his rushing yards that's for sure, but it looks like we're playing a much more balanced defense this year. By that I mean, we'll have LBs to chase him down instead of 1 or 2 of them being taken out of the play on a blitz (no knock on Tenuta).

What are your thoughts?

I don't think VT should be favored. They gave 160 yards on the ground to ECU which we will repeat and their offense is still having problems and actually more problems than us.

Unless you're a top 15 team, you're not walking into Lane Stadium as the favorite. Bottom line.

VT hasn't started the season 1-2 in 13 years. Just a fun fact.

.......

and? Are you seriously telling me VT's stadium isn't a big homefield advantage?

Their crowd was loud until we hit a long pass on the first play. Shut them up the rest of the day.

I don't think this game will look anything like the BC game. Our special team play scares me right now.

I think VPI always has a defense that is prepared and ready to play. To defend our option, you need discipline and team work and VPI is known for that. It will be a very very tough game for us to pull out.

However, VPI is a little lost right now and a few early big plays by us could open the flood gates.

FWIW I was at the '06 game and sat in the upper deck surrounded by VT fans and I remember us noting how we didn't feel the noise/atmosphere lived up to the hype. Maybe it was the fact we were winning and had some big plays but honestly it was nowhere near as loud as Sanford Stadium, Klimpzun, or FSU.

Having watched the Hokies live in Charlotte:
1. They are simply not going to replace the linebackers and DE lost. They lost too much speed and talent. Their front seven is now average to good.
2. Their OLine should block better than it does. They are big and strong, but they are not quick and did not play very hard against ECU.
3. They have speed at WR. Take away the deep ball and their offense will not be effective.
4. No TB is a great runner, at least not yet.
5. In spite of the kick blocked against them, they are still very good on special teams.

Therefore, I like our chances if we give up no more than 10 points on turnovers, special teams plays, and deep passes.

JTS mentioned this on Saturday:

VT has a long standing habit of sucking until they play Tech, then turning it on afterwards. The only real difference, traditionally, is whether they turn it on at kickoff, at halftime, or the next game.

The last 5 meetings between the two teams have been decided by 10 points or more. I think that ends Saturday as I am expecting a close game in which the difference is defense and points off turnovers.
