1) I've got to admit it...I hate the way BOB calls plays. I can't figure him out. Last year, it was Joe Burns left, right and up the middle...even though we needed to pass. This year, he won't commit to the run when it's obvious that's what we should do. Last night, Clinkscale had a 50 yard run to start the game, but he ends up with only 5 carries. What's up with that? Suggs didn't play half bad last night, but we were calling pass plays on 2nd and short or 3rd and short. Memo to BOB: Run the damn ball.

2) If I see us throw a 5 yard pass on 3rd and 10 again, I'm gonna puke.

3) Our receivers are good, but outside of Watkins, nobody is making plays. Difficult catches are not being made. There are drops and fumbles. In the 1st half, we had a guy that could have stretched out for the pylon and score a TD, but he didn't. It looked like he was a little tentative and afraid of getting hit.

4) Suggs looked good last night for the most part. I hate this experiment of bringing in Bilbo during the 3rd series. QB is not a musical chair position. This coaching staff needs to decide who is the better QB and stick with them. Offenses run better when we know who the QB is going to be. If a QB is constantly looking over his shoulder, he's not going to be a leader. I think that's part of Suggs' problem.

5) Our defensive line is worse than mediocre. They get ZERO pass rush and they don't penetrate.

6) Our linebackers and DB's, on run support, seemed to take themselves out of plays in that 3rd quarter. They'd run up to the line and duck into a pile, instead of plugging the openings. At least, that's the way it looked to me. Did anyone else notice this?

7) There was a distinct lack of fire on this team last night. They didn't play like they wanted to win. In order to progress as a program, we have to get some competitive fire. Maryland hit harder and hustled more than we did. That's what bothers me the most.

8) I think the injuries have taken their toll physically and mentally on this team. It may be beyond the coaching staff's ability to rectify this. I hope not.

6-6 or 5-7 looks like our record for this year. I'm not going to call for Gailey's head or anything. That's crazy. It's his first year. OTOH, I want to see some changes in our offensive coaching. We're dissheveled and we won't allow ourselves to be good at anything. If the pass works, we try to run. If the run works, we try to pass. We have no identity on offense and it's killing our chances at a good season. Defensively, we need to recruit for defensive linemen. You can see what a difference it makes for UGA to have a guy like David Pollack. We need something like that on our line.

i agree with pretty much everything you said there...good post...#2 was especially annoying to me last night...(among other things of course)

How about a -1 yard pass on 3rd and 10?

NEVER understood the 'West Coast' theory of on 3rd and X or 4th and X, why the play is designed for the receiver to catch the ball at some distance short of X. I know the idea is to throw it where the other team will let you catch it and the receiver will (hopefully) get to X AND get a decent spot.

The throw it short syndrome seems to be loaded with failure points. The QB must put the ball in a place that the receiver can catch and 'keep running' to X. If the ball is low or high, even if the receiver catches it, forget it. Too much time for the defense to react and shut the receiver down.

I'm sorry, run all the receivers to X and force the ball in there if you have to.

I too do not understand CONSTANTLY throwing the ball short when you need to get to X. I can appreciate mixing it up some, but it does not seem like we do that at all.

Was BOB really reigned in last year by GOL? That seems to be the theory with going to Burns so much last year. However, this year we don't stick with the run enough. Did we pass most (ALL?) of the time on 2nd or 3rd and short last night or what? I caught some of the 1st half on the radio. Did we actually try the option twice in a row after it failed the first time? It seems that BOB relies too much on "They won't be expecting this." Almost like he's over thinking, analyzing, etc. Those out routes deep in our own territory scared the hell out of me. Glover fumbles one. Maryland nearly took one back from a TD. I remember a similar pass being down 24-17 in the UGA game last year.

Penalties killed us. I actually loved the call on the fake punt (risky though), but then a flag for a personal foul. Too many men on the field. Illegal substitution. STOOPID PENALTIES.

Pressure on the defensive front killed us.

I did not think that Suggs really looked bad. Playcalling was a big problem, IMHO. I wish that Bilbo had come in a little earlier, once the game was definitely out of reach. I think putting him in for a while in the second series of the second half was a mistake though. All that said, however, count me in the Bilbo camp for QB. I was on the fence, but I am leaning that way for now.

How about the dropped pass in the end zone late in the 3rd or early in the 4th? I believe it was a freshman so I give him a little slack, but that ball was certainly catchable. From the replays, it looked like ot hit him right in the chest. He was covered, but AJ put the ball on the money. No real effort to get the ball.

Maryland averaged 7-8 yds/play on their first two drives in the 2nd half. Yikes.

A couple of positives: We did move the ball on offense. BOB being in the booth is a good thing. We hung tough in the first half despite our inability to score.

Summary: It does not LOOK good from here. (That's one reason I say maybe Bilbo ought to be the man.) However, if we could have cut down on penalties and stalled drives, the outcome would have been, at least, somewhat different. Call me a Pollyanna, but I still think there are some positive things you can take away from this game.

I thought that most of the drops were very catchable balls. It's hard to keep a drive going when you drop passes that are right to you, or fumble at the end of a pass-run. On the plus side, I was glad to see a number of receivers catch passes.
