I went to the Houston-Navy game today. Houston has a quick, physical defense and one of the best d tackles in the nation -Ed Oliver.
Navy came out running zone dive and the triple with Abey pitching early: Navy moved the ball well in the first half and held a 14-7 lead but squandered two scoring chances:
In the 2nd half Navy got behind, mainly because they could not stop Houston’s bubble screens , tried 3 quarterbacks and ultimately lost the game. In the 4th quarter they looked as desperate as Tech did last week. I think they had 79yds rushing in 2nd half and 200 for the game.
I’ve been watching both teams for years. I have come to the conclusion that the offense needs tweaking. Sure the stats still look good but Against many defenses the only safe play to run on first down is dive or qb follow. The rocket toss does not seem to gain the yardage it used to and a lot of the qb keeps and pitches on the option get strung out and lose yardage We all know what this offense does from behind the chains. The failure is more than blown assignments
The offense needs to be more balanced from a run/pass standpoint and a traditional screen\bubble screen\short passing game needs to be developed to combat theses hellish pass rushes. Maybe playing with a tight end some would help the outside running game:
I love triple option football from under center but I think CPJ, CKN and CIJ need to add some wrinkles next year.
