PJ was on 680 this morning and was asked what his thoughts were to the opinion that his O would not work at the Div. 1 level. His response was that he believed the offense averaged around 30 ppg this season against BCS conference opponents (it was actually 37) and that he is confident that his O philosophy can carry over into ACC.

One thing he said when asked about recruiting is that you probably will not see GT go after the 6'5" proto-type drop back passer with no mobility.

Really? I would be happy with 14-0 next year with 0 pass attempts.

I guess...I just hope our "winning" offense has room for some passing, the same old option play over and over would get old quick...speaking here from a purely entertainment perspective.

I concur...I was watching that Navy vs. Notre Dame game from this year...and yeah they won...but I don't know how many seats that offense would fill (I think it was something like 1-2 passes in the first half)...or if even I could watch it seasons at a time...Saying that I'm sure CPJ will put more passing into his gameplan here and it won't be a worry...but either way I'll be content as long as we're winning...

After watching our offense over the past six seasons, I will gladly accept any offense that leads to Ws. If we could run the same play over and over again and win games doing it, I would be perfectly fine with that...because winning is the ultimate entertainment for me.

As long as the one play we run is "the touchdown play", that's all I care about.

The option can be boring to watch if you don't have a legitimate big run threat. But if you see some old footage of Joe running it or Nebraska from the 90's, it can be really exciting. Just picture Dwyer taking the pitch, and then breaking off a 60 yard run.

I understand what you are saying macon, but do we want to be entertained or do we want to win?

On another similar subject, I think the best indication as to what PJ's offense will bring is what was mentioned here...how many points he has put up on BCS schools, most of which he lost to, only beating 4 BCS teams w/ winning records in 6 years as his critics would say (of which I am one) BUT...his defense was atrocious...if he can put up 30 PPG against lower tier BCS schools w/ Navy's talent, I would hope he could put up similar #'s against more talent but also using more talent.

I guess what I'm saying is that I think defense will be key as it has been the past 6 years. Keeping Tenuta would be great! We're going to need another solid Defense next year.

It's not the same play every time, though. That's the thing. It's like 10 or 20 different option plays, and each of them could end up getting the ball to 3 different guys.

Tech fans don't realize how much fun it is to watch running teams run option, because we think "run" and we think "PJ Daniels off tackle," which we may see none of under Johnson.

The Triple Flex is entertaining.

Regardless of who actually gets the ball, it is bascially the same play over and over. I wasn't very inspired by it from watching the Navy Army game, it got old quick, but that's just me. If it works it works...hopefully we will run a somewhat balanced offense...i.e. 60/40 run/pass...absolute maximum 70/30.

I like the option --enjoy watching it when you have the right pieces in place to really be effective with it. IMO it is a fun offense --but I'll like it that much better if I know that underneath the guise of it all is a passing game that can be tapped into when needed.

I must be the only one who would love to watch the option the whole game with no passing, trust me he will pass, and our recievers will be WIDE open.

I enjoy watching the option too, just not 80% of our plays...I'm telling you, it will get old. (but again, if it works it works)

I guess this is all speculation until we actually see it...a long time from now!

It never got old for me at all of those Southern games I went to as a kid. I don't think it will here either, because winning is more entertaining than not winning. If it's not winning, I don't think PJ will continue doing it.

There were a few things I took away from watching the ND-Navy replay last night.

- The talent difference was extremely obvious, much moreso than even GT-Duke. ND's players just always towered over Navy's.
- Navy didn't pass much, but a couple of their passes were absolutely key to their win. I must say, it was pretty damn exciting to see the Navy QB suddenly take a drop and throw it to a wide open receiver downfield while the defense is too busy worrying about everything except the QB and the WR.
- They said somewhere that Navy averaged 4.4 penalties per game. Very disciplined team.

So yeah, I'm sold on the triple option offense now, or at least PJ's version of it. It runs a lot of time off the clock and it seems to actually open up for more big pass plays than our old pro-style offense. Spring practice can't come soon enough.

Anybody remember Danny Myers, David Sims, Adrian Rucker, Tony Head - threats to break one for chunks of yardage or TD on any play? IMHO, that's the excitement of watching option ball - is this play the play? Remember Steve Raible - the long balls he caught because the throw was always unexpected? Remember the Auburn game in which we got up big by half, gave it back 3rd quarter, late 4th Myers hit Raible for a long TD, stands went nuts but.... called back on phantom holding call? If we had had even a nominal defense those years .... oh man, because the O was almost unstoppable.
